Hi everybody, first post on the new forums.
My Mk1 MX5 1.6 seems to make a chirping noise between 2500rpm and 2900rpm. It occurs when stationary or moving so i’m fairly satisfied its not a suspension problem. Its definatly not the interior either and Its seems to be coming from the front of the engine near the belts on the front right hand side.
It also isn’t there when the engine is cold and only occurs when it has warmed up.
Any help would be appreciated thanks
Hi.
Does putting pressure on the clutch pedal make any difference?
Nope, putting pressure on the clutch makes no difference at all
I have has both the alternator and powersteering pump give me odd sounds on my mk1.
Failing this look at exhaust rattles
I’ve adjusted the belts on my lunchbreak (the noise remains tho) and I replaced the alternator last year. Hmmm will look in to exhausts as it seems to be coming from the manifold/heat shield. I had to do some unexpected offroading in the 5 recently so may have worked somthing loose there. Thanks for your help tho
I had a similar problem with my other car (BMW 518), it only made the noise at certain revs. As it turned out it was the belts (which I swapped out), I thought it was pulleys, pumps etc as it sounded like it was in that area. A good way, is to rub a candle on the belts (turn the engine off first) and go for a short run. The wax helps to lube the belt a little and stops the noises…
Other thoughts are antifreeze, as in do you have it in? It helps lubricate the water pump and stop it squeaking.
You could always blast round with the WD40 in one spot at time and isolate the problem. WD40 is fairly safe as it dries off after a short while - the very reason I never lubricate with WD40, it can in fact remove oils and dry things out. Old engineering tutor of mine told me that when I was but a young lad and by George was that silly old git right

Hi looking through old posts - did you find the chirping noise? Does it happen when you take your foot off the accelerator and car decelerates? I discovered a bolt and stud missing under heatshield on the exhaust manifold - chirping noise was the gasses being pushed/sucked past the metal gasket! Also all of the bolts were loose so not sure if gasket had deteriorated or worked its way loose - only happened when it was warm.
Hi, sorry for not getting back to everybody
Turned out it was a combination of slipping alternator belt when warmed up and a crack on the manifold heat shield. Having replaced the alternator belt and heat shield the noise has gone
