Engine Management Light

Some time ago my engine management light came on and I immediately took it to  the independent repairer around the corner from me to find out what was what.

They said it’s reading fault code p2187 which means lean mixture when idling.

They put the light out but of course after a few days it came back on. I use 97 octane premium fuel and I’ve added Redex for a while now to help clean it out internally.

Extinguished the light  myself a few times by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting but again  the light is soon back on.

As I understand it it could be a faulty O2 sensor or sucking unmetered air in via the intake manifold or associated pipework (in which case I’d have thought it would be

running lean all the time and not just  when idling) which I know is not a good thing.

Anyway, is it safe to ignore it or best get it fixed.

If the opinions are get it fixed I’m thinking take it to  a Mazda dealer. But for them to check it for themselves and then say change the O2 sensor because it’s miss reading

I estimate that’s at least £200 before anything else. Oh it’s a MK3.5 2.0 Sport by the way 2009 model. done about 33000 miles.

What’s my best course of action (if any).

Any thoughts anybody?

I’d say get it seen to, but where are you? People could recommend excellent independent garage
in your area.

I live in Burnham on Sea, Somerset.

Automania around the corner from me are a good all round service & repairer but I just wondered if this work would be better done by a dealer or as  suggested a Mazda specialist.

Also the car runs well, and I can get well over 40mpg on a gentle run, a bit too good actually, might be running too weak. Also I’ve often thought the tickover
a bit erattic, it seems to ‘hunt’ up and down a little instead of settling into an even tickover.
Perhaps I’m answering my own question - pay up and shut up!

Paul.

P.S. I don’t mind travelling  within the Somerset area if someone can recommend a Mazda specialist.

When I bought my car it had recently been MOT’d and “had adjustments done”. The seller said the engine light wasn’t on before this work but now comes on.

They had taken it back to have the light put out but it came back on a week later.

I bought the car and also an OBD II reader (MaxiScan £9.95 off eBay) and after about 4 goes 4 months ago it has now stayed off.

For ten pounds it’s worth a go I would have thought.

Dead easy to use once you’ve done it the first time.

Decided to take your advice Paul G.
I have ordered a Maxiscan OBD 11 reader off ebay.

Does it come with any instructions or is it self explanatory?

Paul

Dead simple but it comes with a 25 page booklet. There are only 2 buttons so there’s a 50% chance of getting it right.

After using it about 6 times I estimate I could erase a code while stopped at the lights.

Cheers

I had the same issue, bought the car 2012 kuru in April and filled up using premium unleaded and always filled with the more expensive fuel thinking that’s better for the engine. Two weeks ago engine management light appeared, fault code read rich mixture, ran fuel tank low, filled up with cheaper petrol and within two days light went out and no faults showing on code reader.
