Engine mount metal cups

  1. My model of MX-5 is: '94 Eunos Roadster
  2. I’m based near: Ayr, Scotland
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Engine Mounts

Hello all,

I did a search on the forum but couldn’t find an answer to my question, so hoping someone can shed some light.

There are rectangular metal cups that fit over the rubber mounts and sit between the mount and the subframe.

My engine mounts were shot, so replaced them, with Duraflex mounts. In my unexperienced haste to put the engine back in the car, I’ve forgotton to put these cups(?) back in place before putting the engine back in.

Are these metal cups mandatory and am I going to have to pull the engine back out to put these things back in.

Thanks for looking folks, any advice would be appreciated

Good question and not one I’ve come across before, hopefully someone will be along with an answer soon.

The cups have two functions one is a failsafe for a broken engine mount and also to limit the engine mounts movement.
Me personally I would reinstate them, no need to pull engine out as the full mounts can be changed with the engine in by supporting the engine from above or below, its a bit fiddly and you may need to unbolt it from the block and subframe to give the clearance required to slide the cups back in.
