Engine number - what can it tell me?

So, I have this replacement engine, from Crackers on mx5nutz (to whom thanks).  As far as he knows, it’s a 1.8 from a 1996 UK car, with about 50k miles.

Does the engine number (BP 191955 if I read it right) narrow down its age at all?  If anyone has an engine number (maybe written on their car’s V5) which is similar-ish, I’d really appreciate it if they could let me know, to help narrow down the age of the engine.

At first sight, it looks identical to my (1993-built) 1.8 Roadster engine.  Crackers swapped the engine’s oil pressure switch for a proper oil pressure sensor, strongly suggesting it dates from after the changeover in mid 1995.  If it were from a UK car, I would have expected to find some kind of extra gubbins on the back of the inlet manifold for exhaust gas recovery, but I can’t see any parts I don’t recognise.  So I’m wondering if it’s a Roadster engine instead.  Am I mistaken about that?  Should a '96 MX-5 have EGR?

Any other clues I should look for?  Any photos I could post which would help?

Thanks.

A correction to the above - the engine number is BP 919155.  I got the digits transposed in my head.
