Having bought my first mx5 1.8 from an ethuseast he informs me that he only used true 100% synthetic oil. The car is 1999. Can anyone tell me where i can get this (Norfolk), how much is it going to cost, is it really necessary, and can i use a substitute?

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum![]()
Fully synthetic is the oil of choice for a lot of MX5 owners, in a Mk1 engine it helps cut HLA clatter [tappets sort of]. You can buy it from any good accessory shop. Mobil1 5w50 is what I use, but Sylkothene also gets good reviews as does Redline. Have a look in the FAQ in this section [engine], here’s a link to help

This guy supplies oil door to door for a reasonable price, so I’m told
I just ordered a carton of 5W40 fully-synthetic from this chap, as recommended by various people :

I emailed him with details of the the car, driving requirements etc… and he recommended quite a few options across the price range, in the end I opted for this Fuchs oil:

Turned up very quickly so I will certainly be using them again.
Have just emailed them for oil for my car. My car was serviced with castrol (my choice) in Sept.
