Engine Oil

Hi,

Please can you confirm what type of engine oil to purchase for topping up my Mazda.

MX5 Mk1 Eunos roadster 1.8 Auto

I’d buy a 10w40 of a known brand, that is on offer. You may get different opinions though.

LOL, not from me - would just add semi synthetic

CASTROL MAGNATEC 10W40 A3 B4 OIL

The Castrol Magnatec 10W40 A3 B4 Oil clings to the engines surface like a magnet providing constant protection even when the engine is switched off, providing critical engine protection during start and warm-up periods.

Every time you start your car it takes most oils 10 minutes to work effectively, because the oil cannot protect properly until it reaches a critical temperature. Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W40 is different as it gets to work straight away by virtue of a unique synthetic ester that clings to the engine like a magnet.

Halfords, Comma or GM 10w 40 semi synth oil will suffice, don’t get too hung up on all that techy stuff like some folk do.

Which ever is on offer and is the best price as had been advised.

Just buy any of those, stop asking questions and worrying about nothing.

Castrol £20 on Amazon at the moment…

10/40 semi synthetic is fine. No need to go to the expense of fully synthetic as the engine was never designed for it.

Thanks for the heads up re oil on Amazon, much appreciated.

Thanks for the information.

Yes it is meeting of minds and a self help area.

You were given a very clear answer to your question and after getting that very clear message rather than give a quick thanks and buy what was advised, you asked the same question again but in a different way.

The answer is the same.

Hi Black Pudding,

Mobil, http://www.mobil.co.uk/UK-English-LCW/carengineoils_which-oil.aspx recommend New Life 0W40 for the iron block 1.8 engines, or check the oil selectors on the web for other UK brands.

The original advice was to buy any known brand.

The second question was, in effect, is Triple QX a ‘known’ brand?

I don’t see the problem. Kumho & Apollo tyres are ‘known’ to those with an existing interest in tyres but someone new and not wanting to cock-up on a big purchase might not have heard of either and would like clarification. It might be that Triple QX is like Kumho, a known brand, well regarded, and so it’s not worth paying more. Or it might be an Apollo that is to be avoided.

People know that oil is a vital component for their car and don’t want to get the wrong stuff, whilst not spending more than they need. A request for clarification seems fine surely, it’s not like buying baked beans is it.

I see the Mobil site is recommending their Mobil 1 0W-40. This is a full synthetic and will cost you arm and a leg. The only benefit is that you could safely leave it in for double the mileage of the recommended 10W-40 semi-synthetic if you felt comfortable about doing this. This extended change interval is the main reason car makers specifiy full synthetics. If you’re a home mechanic then the only benefit is halving the number of times you lie on the ground under the car changing the oil! Personally I can’t get to grips with paying over £50 for five litres of full synthetic oil when if you shop around you can pick up good semi for about £15.

Castrol oil ordered and on it’s way…big saving on Amazon against original price.  Thanks again.

I appreciate your mature replies.  Perhaps the histrionics will cease now!!
