Would any members recommend steam cleaning my engine bay ? if so does anyone know any steam cleaners in the West London area?
No, I wouldn’t. Cover all your electrics with polythene bags and rubber bands first. Then use a paintbrush and a tin of Gunk to loosen all the dirt, then use a hosepipe with the spray tuned down to a very fine spray of water to wash the Gunk and dirt off. When finished wipe all excess water off everywhere in the engine bay. To make it easier you could take off some of the engine bits and pieces .
Steam cleaning is generally not recommended, and you could probably get a perfectly acceptable job with a hose and sponge, without the knackered electrics & water in the air inlet and such.
If you do, you need to get a very reputable specialist (keeping in mind that anybody can buy a steam cleaner), so that when things go wrong, they can hopefully put it right for you.
Thanks, I’ll probably take your avice
Although I agree that steam cleaning is a dangerous sport, If you are going to do it follow these instructions.
1. warm up engine
1. Cover everything electrical with plastic bags and hold in place with rubber bands.
2. spray Gunk or Jizer onto dirty bits
4. Try to keep spray from electrical items
I have steamed many engines using thei technique and have never had any problems, the results speak for themselves.
Make sure you don’t get water down the spark plug wells, this will cause a misfire and bring on the engine management light!
i steam mine every few months never had a problem.
