has anyone on here ever done a engine swap with the V6 you get from a mx3 into a mk1 mx5
i’ll be quite interested to do this instead of having a turbo conversion
any info?

The MX-3 has a transverse engine (FWD), the MX-5 engine is longitudinal (RWD).
As I understand it the main issues are the sump will not fit (MX-5 sump needs to clear a cross member) and is baffled for oil surge in a different plane, gearbox bellhousing is incompatible and the engine mounts and manifolds don’t really line up for an MX-5 installation.
I’m sure previous attempts are documented on t’internet (Google is your friend) but sadly not here.
2.0 4-pot out of a Kia Sportage is an easier conversion apparently (it’s a Mazda engine made under licence) but still requires bellhousing magic to work.
shame wold have been nice to have some nice V6 noise under the bonnet
anyone know if a RX7 engine transplant
I don’t believe anyone’s done a swap for the K8 out of an MX-3 because it’s essentially an underbored version of the KL from an MX-6 or Ford Probe. (Why fit a 1.8 when you could fit the same engine as a 2.5?)
Best place to browse engine swaps is the dedicated forum on Miata.net : http://forum.miata.net/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=38
There’s at least one (rather impressive) KL-ZE swap there, and a UK member who’s working on a KL swap now.
Theres an American chap who has put a V6 into his ‘Meeaardah’. It sounds really nice. Ithink he said it was from a Mazda - Xedos maybe. Look up V6 Miata on You Tube.

ok cheers Ian
i am looking at the 13b route now too
If this link works - hope it helps
There are a few KL conversions. I believe there is a member on the locost forums who has doen a couple of the 2.5’s into a 5.
From the pictures I have seen athey water jet up a peice to get a nice fit to the gearbox, they cut into the bell housing to add the starter moter on the other side of the fire wall and use a different sump of some sort.
Obviously there are a lot of other custom bit to move stuff and fit things but thats the essence of it. However, not an undertaking for the uninformed.
Good luck - id love the mazda V6 is a sweet reving litte unit and the imported ones in 2.5 guise are over 200bhp.
