My 2002 mk2.5 has always had a strange ‘tingly’ vibration seemingly from the engine, which I can feel through the throttle pedal - it ‘buzzes’ away under my right foot at 3000 rpm upward. The car runs fine, pulls strongly, has done just 66,000 miles, and the engine oil looks clean, and it does not use a drop of oil between services, so the engine doesn’t feel like it’s about to explode or anything dramatic.
I’m wondering where to look for the source of this vibration - engine mounts?, exhaust?.. is this a known problem?
thanks
On a car of its age I would view it as a bit of character and leave well alone. If its important it will get worse, but it could well be like that for the rest of its life and life is too short to go look for failures.
Thats good advice - I’m not even sure the NVH (noise vibration harshness) in my MX5 is any worse than normal - when you come from a whsiper-quiet modern car, I guess an MX-5 will always seem a little more harsh. I’ll just get on with enjoying the car then…
What a rubbish, cop out answer.
If you get the car onto a ramp, you should be able to tighten up any loose bolts, heatshields, check the exhaust hangers and engine mounts.
Engine mounts are very easy to replace but a bit of a bugger to check, i would be suprised if they have gone as mine were still in very good nick at 15 years and 130k miles. Check for excessive engine play when revving with the bonnet up.
Due to the design of the 5, any vibrations from around the car can travel, from a sticky U/J on the prop to a less than new clutch.
I had a horrible resonating sound at 2500rpm (no more, no less) which many told me to ignore, the cause was two worn heater hose grommets in the firewall causing the copper pipes to resonate against the firewall. £3 on the genuine parts and easy to fit when i did the heater hoses.
The basics are easy and cheap (for anyone) to check but don’t chase your own tail over a slight quirk.
A slight tingle in the throttle pedal, from looking at road tests of the original I think they did it from new. Its a bit different from something loose or a broken engine mount etc. All MK1’s I have ever driven have this, I just assume it is part of the vehicle and considered acceptable by Mazda. Now a resonance I would agree, but a buz in the throttle pedal and only the pedal…
