Hey all
I’m sure that you have been asked this question a ton of times so I’m sorry in advance…
I’m looking for what people think of the air-con in a 92 Eunos 1.6… is it worth keeping and trying to source a gas for it? (If so where do you get the gas?)
Or is it worth completely ripping out and ssving on weight etc…
I quite like the thought of having air con but I’ve never had any luck finding the gas…
Thanks in advance
Dan
The aircon gas that was used is called R12. This was banned and fazed out in 1994. More modern/safer alternatives can be used but only if different lubricants are used. Here’s what I found after some googling. https://www.autoairconparts.co.uk/r12-to-r134a-retrofit-conversion-kit.html
You may find that the gas is only the start of your problems. After 30 odd years there’s every likelihood that there will be leaks in the system which you’ll spend months and a small fortune trying to track down, then you’ll fix it and the compressor will go, and you’ll eventually decide to cut your losses and rip it out. I speak from experience.

I turned my aircon on on earlier this week in the sunshine (warm day) to test it was still working. The roof and windows were down. After 10mins my wife (who really feels the cold) asked me to turn it off.

Personally, I thought the A/C was an unnecessary addition to the 1.6 NA. I removed the compressor and all associated pipework and bracketry and saved about 80 lbs in weight, so a great option for me but realise it may not suit everyone😉

I thought Aircon was great in my NA as I used the car year round. Not so important in the summer, but really good for demisting in winter.
