I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Air Con Recharge
Took my car to Halfords Autocentre to have the air con re-charge topped up. Was told their machine would not attach to my car. Not sure if this is because my car is 1996 Eunos? Has anyone with similar had their air con re-gassed somewhere, thinking of Kwick Fit?
This is probably because your Euros was designed to use the older R22 type of refrigerant which is no longer legal to use. These systems have a different connector to modern ones.
Yes, I guess it’s a 1600? Quite late for Eunos 1600 aircon though, most were 1993 of before.
What is the registration number prefix?
The early Eunos, typically 1989-1993 ran R12 refrigerant with different valves to the later system 1993 on fitted to the 1800 with R134a.
You should still be able to get a drop-in replacement for the R12 but it will be at least £70. Don’t be tempted to change valves and fill with R134a. There will be a number of problems.
It will only be the later aircon system with R134a or the modern equivalent; nothing else fitted to the Eunos 1.8. I would have thought this was basic stuff for recharging so cannot see why there would be any issue at Kwik Fit other than some localised confusion. Perhaps they thought it was an earlier Eunos 1600 with R12 and did not check the valves?
Google ‘mx5 R134a valve’ in images and compare to yours.
