Given the low weight and relatively wide tyres I was expecting it to be terrible, but amazingly it felt quite well planted even on sheet ice, which suprised me. Even the back stayed roughly where it should be (despite the little demon whispering “go on, boot it round this corner…!”)
I thought that narrow tyres were best for snow, but my tin-top on narrower wheels was all over the place, not helped by the ABS which basically seems to just turn the brakes off.
Anyone else had a similar experience driving in snowy conditions?

Narrow tyres will dig through soft snow and find a grippier surface, if there is one a bit better than wider ones. But so many things can effect this ie weight/tyre type/front or rear wheel drive etc. I think its just a case of adapting to the conditions at the time. My last experience of driving in any substancial snow (at least for us in the South) was on a trip to Goodwood and it was a bit challenging, but fun and I was lucky enough to have the photo I took of the car and conditions on arrival featured in the MX-5 2009 calender (February). It just proves that you dont have to us them just in the summer.
