I bought a 1993 eunos roadster in black a few months ago and have recently discovered it is an S-Special editon. I was just wondering if this edition of the mk1 eunos roadster was rare or anything like that? Can’t seem to find a whole lot online other than telling me what the car came with.
Not really rare.
Bilstein suspension and a viscous lsd if it’s a 1.6. Should have 14" bbs wheels also.
rare to find the wheels still on it!
I sold mine last year.
Should have a Nardi leather-rimmed steering wheel with matching leather gear knob. Stainless steel sill tread plates. 14" BBS alloy wheels, upgraded suspension including Bilstein shock absorbers (although probably long since needed replacing!). Thicker anti-roll bars and a yellow engine bay strut brace. Boot spoiler was an option.
I have the correct wheels for sale if you’re interested, as the owner took the car with some Enkeis fitted instead;
Regular trim level from 1992. Originally in black or red only, later the colours were expanded. Factory boot spoiler as standard, but later was a no cost delete, as many owners didn’t like it.
Bilstein suspension package, which consisted of Bilsteins, slightly tuned spings (springs same length as stock, but Bilstein shocks have a spring perch about 10mm lower than stock Showa. The slightly reduced ride height meant that when new, these cars had bumpstops that were a little less tall than stock; moot because these have been NLA for years. The lowered ride height also affected steering geometry, so different track rod ends. The same part number was used for the NB. The shock tower brace was part of the package (the MX5 doesn’t have struts, so the brace isn’t particularly functional compared to, say, a Macpherson strut car (Mk1 Escort etc) having a strut brace.
On the 1.6 S-Special, the front ARB is the same as stock, at 19mm. But the rear ARB is 1mm thinner than stock, at 11mm. The thinner ARB dials in a littler understeer.
With the 1.8, it all changed. Stock front bar was 19mm (but its a different ARB from the 1.6, but you can retro fit the 1.8 bar to a 1.6, but the drop links sit back a bit). On the 1.8 Special, the front ARB becomes 20mm. The later S-Special carries over the stock 1.6 12mm rear ARB (as do all Torsen 1.8 cars), but non Torsen cars have 11mm rear ARBs, same as the 1.6 S-Special.
Tread plates were shared with the S-Package. 1.6 versions had the viscous 4.300 LSD that Mazda never called a LSD only called it a “sports differential”, because of the lock up ratio (ie. its not really a LSD). 1.8 models had a 4.100 Torsen T1 LSD, but from late 1995, this became a 4.300 Torsen T2 LSD.
S-Specials also had stainless steel teardrop speaker covers. On the 1.6, the sound system was the Pioneer “Mazda Sensory Surround Sound” system, denoted by a silver double din radio-cd. The seat backs were wired as bass thumpers.These cars also had door mounted tweeters. By now, most of these cars, certainly in the UK, would have had the original head unit pulled and dumped.
