European Breakdown Cover

Does anyone have recommendations for where to get European breakdown cover?

I have been an AA member for many years. I am taking my 25 year old MK1 on a European trip this weekend.

Looking at the AA online, the amoutn of money being quoted is astronomical.

Green Flag wont touch anything over 15 years old, and I susect others are the same.

So recommendations please?

I get mine through the AA tbh, and I think you’ll struggle to get a better level of cover for the money…

One tip though, Ring them for a quote… I did and found them to be a fair bit cheaper than there online quoted price

When my old Vectra passed fifteen both AA and Green Flag said they were not interested in it.  However the RAC were quite happy and still only wanted the usual rate for cover, provided the car was regularly and correctly serviced.

At twenty years old when a spring failed prematurely in the cambelt tensioner the RAC were excellent in getting us home from 130miles away.  Admittedly this was not European cover, but the little bit of extra quoted for that was not excessive at the time.

I now use the RAC for the MX5, mainly because of the lack of a spare tyre and the possibility of SWMBO driving it!

I have annual cover with LV=Britannia Rescue, I was with the RAC but they only covered one breakdown abroad.

This subject has also worried me, considering mine is 12 years old this year, I wonder who will cover me if we decide to go in to europe again.

Just one thing to be aware of though.

I’m not overly convinced that in the even of a major breakdown, they would oridnarily repat the car. They may just pay you up, as if it were a write off.

I got a massive puncure on the Bike whilst in Germany, turned out that everywhere closes on Saturday afternoon and Monday was a bank holiday, which meant that I was standed From Saturday until Tuesday.

When I suggested that maybe they should fly me home and repatriate the bike, they basically told me that to do this,  they would work out what the bike was worth and compare that against the cost to repatriate it.

In other words, write it off, for a puncture.

Needless to say, I accepted the offer of a Hotel until Tuesday.

The outcome wasn’t ideal having to stay behind while my mates carried on without me, but I did get to stay in a lovelly little town and sample some fine German ales.

Thankyou all.

I have foudn that my insurance has a limited European cover (RMS).

They opay £250 towards getting the car recovered to the nearest garage, plus hire car expenses.

That is a bit minimal, but better than nothing.

With the holiday in Greece coming up I contacted our travel ins, which is done via a Nationwide Plus account, and asked them the same question. Repatriation would depend on the current value of the car, which being a 61 plate would (I hope) be worth more than the repatriation back to the UK. They will also pay hotel bills and ferry costs if we miss it through a breakdown.

In all I’ve found the Nationwide Plus account to be really good for the addition benefits you get for the £120 annual cost. It has covered my wifes annual ski trip including recovery from the slopes, the car holidays, bike holidays, mobile phone ins, an additional years cover on any electrical goods bought (I had a new screen on my computer free of charge from it which would have cost £75), plus a lot of other things… alternatively the travel ins alone is was more expensive through AA at £130, Mobile phone ins was quoted at £72  a year.

Can’t fault it so far…

not a recommendation but just a fact; I have European breakdown through Adrian Flux, its for 12 months and was a fraction of the cost of buying just a couple of weeks cover through one of the major companies.  For older cars the AA and RAC are very expensive even if you are a member…

ASDA European Breakdown for me every time… Here’s my experience of them.

I imagine regulars on here have been running a book on how long it was before I suggested ASDA, but they have been brilliant abroad and at home, and don’t mind that your vehicle is decades old so don’t charge an excess because of it.
