European Road Trip 2025

Hi I’m planing to do a road trip in my MX5 in 2025. I live near Carlisle so plan to get the ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam because I cant face driving south and
dealing with the traffic and Dover conjestion. From Amsterdam I plan to go through Germany down to Austria then over the Stevia Pass in Italy to Lake Garda then down to Florence. If any one has advice regarding places to visit on the way through Germany I would appreciate it. I planned to make a stop at Kessel for a few days and then down to Munich. My wife and I are not city people and prefer nice countryside and small towns etc. So basically I’m looking for nice places to visit on the trip as I have never been to Germany.

What a wonderful journey to look forward to!

I can help with a couple of suggestions for the “Amsterdam down to Munich” section of your route

You mention you’re not city people. So I’d suggest aiming for a small town called Vianden in Luxembourg. From Amsterdam, your route could take you through the more scenic (hilly) part of Belgium around Liege. There’s a lovely old castle in Vianden, overlooking the town, and forested hillsides.

From there, you could drop past Trier, then either Saarbrucken or Kaiserslautern and Pforzheim (another smallish town) . Then either direct-ish to Munich (past Ulm), or head south towards Freiburg-im-Breisgau for a scenic drive through the Black Forest, and head across towards Munich from there. Be warned Munich definitely counts as “big city”.

I hope that helps give you a few ideas of routes to explore.

Nick

I can recommend making your way down through the black forest on the b500 black forest High Road, then along lake constance to landau, from there take the deutsch alpen strasser towards fussen, down the fern pass towards innsbruck, then take the old brenner pass into Italy, or the timmelsjock pass instead into Italy. That route would miss Munich but I’ve driven it several times and it’s a fantastic route.

Hey…finally someone else from carlisle area lol!! Sounda a great trip!

If you’ve not been there before you will absolutely love Stelvio and Timmelsjoch. I’ve done both on a motorcycle. Sadly the remains of the once great glacier at Timmelsjoch reminded me of the results of global warming.

Many thanks. Is Kessel a good place to visit ?

Sorry I don’t think I’ve been there, were based in Kent so I always use the tunnel, we usually use the toll roads down to Reims and then head east on the n roads.

We have only done parts of the “Romantic Road” and sadly not in an Mx5……but you should find the sort of places you’re looking for along this route, which takes you down to Bavaria - Austrian Tirol only about an hour’s driving from Munich given normal conditions.
Best do a bit of research re: driving in Munich City…., I’ve heard it’s becoming a lot less car friendly with similar to ULEZ type issues. Prob best to park the car at your accommodation and take the train to central Munich…… easy & efficient as you would expect.
Have a great trip,

This is one of my favourite roads when on the continent.

Many thanks .

Many thanks …looks good.

Amsterdammer here. That sounds pretty cool, I’d love to join.

Some of the guys from the TyneTees region are planning a trip over to Miataland in Italy next year. I can’t find the details of the roads Gary proposed, but i can ask him to pop on here a with some of his ideas…
That might help a little

Many thanks .:+1:
