European Road Trip June 2025

A year ago I asked for help from the MX5 Owners Club planning a road trip through Germany. I received some good advice from some members and I now thank you all for your advice.
My wife and I covered 1891 miles from Carlisle in Cumbria across to the ferry in Newcastle then overnight to Amsterdam. We then drove to Kassel and on down to the Romantic Road route visiting some very pretty German towns. The Romantic Road ends at Fussen the beginning of the Alps. From there we drove through Austria and on to Italy. We went up the Stelvio Pass and over the border into Switzerland through Davos, Zurich, Waldshut Tiengen and noth through the Black Forest eventually ending up back in Amsterdam for the ferry home. We had a fantastic two weeks with many adventures. The German people are very accommodating even with language barriers and we plan to return again. Thanks to everyone on the forum that helped me out… Cheers.

Was the weather kind?
We’d like to return to this area sometime soon, and had thought September might be more dependable as regards sunshine.
This year may be different though?

We were lucky. It was over cast with showers at Kassel. However after Kassel the weather was good and got warmer the further south we went peaking at 37 degrees in Italy at which point the Garmin and the iPhone we were using for navigation started cutting out. We got up early to drive the Stelvio and had to dodge the marmots that were sunbathing. Fussen was very nice and we will return there some time and the Black Forest is still to be fully explored. I hit 140 mph on the Autobahn chasing a Ferrari Daytona…the Ferrari won the race.
Thanks for your advice David. :+1::blush:

Delighted the advice was useful.

Same thing happened to us near Seville-the iPhone Sat nav overheated and cut out-of course it was in a phone holder on the dash, with the sun baking it through the windshield. The ext temp gauge in the car was displaying 41C. Crazy.

Could you share your route please?

I’m assuming you went through Austria to get to Italy. We travel often to Westendorf to ski, although not by road…… we have been there during the summer too- but in a hire car. We’d love to do it in the “5”.

Your route to Europe is interesting too……we could do Belfast to Cairnryan and then drive across to Hull (to Rotterdam) or Newcastle ( to Amsterdam), like you?

I will send the route to you. My wife did all the navigation and she is away this weekend. Oh yes and the unpackaging and repacking was fun too! We stayed in Airbnbs and just two hotels. The cool bag was made bespoke by my wife.

:+1: Thanks. Your wife’s bag is great.

We have 2 Oxford dry-stash waterproof bags- intended for motorcycle use. We had a T45 and I bought a T30, with the idea of putting the smaller volume on the Revo-Rack, with the hope that I might be able to see behind better.

Very quickly discovered that putting the T30 in the boot, was a better idea, because it left much more unoccupied volume in the boot for the ‘paraphernalia of travel’ - all the wee bits and pieces that we need moving around . Shoes, sandels, bathroom stuff, contact lens solutions, towels……etc etc etc

So the T45 sat on the Revo-Rack as before, the T30 in the boot along with the loose bags of “bits”.

Sorry you may have to rotate this text.

Second attempt.
