Exhaust condition / heat shielding - should I be concerned?

  1. My model of MX-5 is: NC
  2. I’m based near: Milton Keyned
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: Exhaust / Cat Shielding condition

Hi, manage to get underneath the NC for the first time after buying it recently second hand. I have noticed some damage to the cat which I think is only minor and a lot of wear to the heat shielding around it. The car has recently been for a full service and inspection at the local Mazda dealer and they never mentioned anything to do with it.

Any cause for concern with the condition that I should worry about? All thoughts welcome.

Hmm, that does not look right on several counts. Is it fouling the propshaft as well?

This is what my NC’s heat-shield looked like last time I was underneath it. Notice how it is almost out of sight snug to the body, and not draped over the under-tray.

It’s always like that on older models, it’s like they took some tin foil out of the kitchen cupboard and held it on with plastic straws.
What you do about it is totally up to you; put something better on, leave it to flap about, or tear it off and enjoy the heat.

Looks horrendous…

Thank you for your photos. Your’s looks a lot neater than mine.

I assume its not a major issue as Mazda didnt pick it up, hopefully just cosmetic. Hoping to get the car to an MX5 specialist sometime soon for a review and some work, will ask them for their view, especially on it covering part of the propshaft.

Thank you, good to know its not just mine!

Hi,
If it was mine I would just have to repair/replace it.
As an “Example” you can get this sort of stuff cheaply from eBay.
Up to 450 degrees C.
Some is self adhesive.

Simplest solution would be a new heatshield from Mazda, It would be neater and look less like a bodge to a future buyer
