Exhaust Manifold change on a Mk2 1.8

[maz] I am just about to change the standard manifold on my mk2 1.8 for a 4 branch stainless steel version. Has anyone advice on what I should look out for in the way of problems with the job?  Is the change worth the rewards in real terms?  http://racingmx5.blogspot.com  It also looks like I will loose the standard head shield.  Is it OK to run without the shield in place?

Hi, is your a 99/2000 model with the cast iron manifold like mine?

Ive been thinking about getting a replacement myself, let me know how it goes

Cheers, Dennis

There’s a bracket attaching the downpipe to the bellhousing that is problematic, as its usually rusted. This bracket I think provides a fair bit of support. On late Mk1 MX5s, Mazda saw fit to delete one of the exhaust hangers. By the time you have a stainless steel system, and manifold on, there’s a fair bit of weight hanging off the cylinder head, so it might be an idea to cobble together a bellhousing bracket for your new manifold. I have a MX5parts manifold, which is fairly typical. After a couple of years, one of the welds on the manifold flange has cracked topside, making me think it might be due to this loss of bracket. Plus the engine rocks about a bit on its mounts. Also, resuse the exisiting manifold gaskets; its much better quality that the usual gaskets supplied with these manifolds. I removed the O2 sensor after I took the manifold out; it just seem much easier, as you need to get a ring spanner on it. It might be a bit rusted in.

I have a replacement manifold to go in, and will be modding the old bellhousing bracket for this.

The oxygen sensor wire will need extending also
