Exhaust sounds like it's blowing

HI folks

Does anyone know the approximate cost for a new exhaust system, (for a Mark 3.5), fitted by one of the  larger outlets?

Not sure if you can see this link which shows the Klarius catalogue entry for your system.

The exhaust comprises 4 main parts - mainfold and first cat combined(maniverter), Second cat(underfloor), central box and backbox,

Do you know where the blowing is occurring? Likely to be centre box or back box. Both are available cheap.

You need to be sure what work needs doing and then get a quote from the usual places. You may find that it is cheaper  to source the part(s) yourself and get pay someone to fit for you.

It sounds like the back box, or pretty near it.

Thanks Rhino

Stick your head underneath (engine off!) and look for sooty marks around the flange where the back box joins on - it could be just the gasket! The standard exhausts generally last a very long time unless damaged. Drive the rear of the car up onto a couple of planks to get a better view.

With the engine running, hold rags over the outlets, you might then be able to hear the blow.

Under the bonnet - use a length of garden hose as a stethoscope to see if its around or at the manifold.

Is it only when the engine is cold that its noisier? If so, this is normal - at least on my mk3 1.8.
