Exhaust System.

Hi guys,

I finally got the brakes settled and now there is a loud rattling sound at the back of my car. According to one of the guys at Paul’s Recovery, its the exhaust system and possibly the heatshield. Guess its time to change it out.

I’m looking for something that has a twin pipe exit and a raspier/throathier growl than the stock exhaust. Hopefully about 10-20% louder but not much more than that as I live in a quiet neighbourhood and I dont want to wake up the neighbours.

One of the systems that really appeal to me is the switchable exhaust done by Xforce Varex (with a flick of a switch, you can toggle between silent and sporty/loud mode)

Is there anything similar in the UK market? if not, I’ll prolly be stuck with the normal exhaust. Can someone recommend me something raspy?
Racing Beat, Jetex are two systems that sound nice, but I cant seem to find any racing beat parts on ebay/mx5parts etc. How would the IL Motorsport in mx5parts compare?

Thanks,
Jiv

Yes, it’s most likely a rattly heatshield, which isn’t part of the exhaust…so replacing the exhaust won’t fix it.

Hi Victor

Thanks for the quick reply. Yea, according to one of Paul’s guts its either the heatshield or the exhaust. Was thinking of upgrading the exhaust to something that looks and sounds nice along with the heatshield.

Oh I see…well, I’m no fan of aftermarket exhausts myself but someone who is will be along soon enough.

Everybody says they want something a little bit louder, but the options seem to start at a lot louder and go up to the full-on Corsa in Maccy D’s carpark volume. Confused

Yea, thats why I’m hoping to get some responses from people who are using them! The videos I’ve seen on youtube arent really too reliable! Dont want to invest in a system only for it to be too loud!

Luckily, Xforce Varex has replied, though am not sure if their quality is as good as Racing Beat/ Jetex?

I had a rattle from my system on the MkI 1.8i soon after I bought it. This turned out to be loose baffles in the back box (diagnosed by crawling underneath and shaking it). I had a custom stainless system made up by a local place and asked for ‘fruity’ but not too loud. I was offered a choice of final tail pipes some of which were more like drain pipes. I opted for a single 3 inch diameter job. To my ear it sounds just right and pedestrians don’t turn their heads much when I give it the beans.

Hi mate,

Thanks! If you dont mind me asking, how much did this set you back? Is it near Manchester??

Thanks!

I used http://www.longlife.co.uk/ for a full s/s exhaust for my Alfa and they did a perfect job, they asked the note I wanted and let me test it after If I was not happy they could change the note/noise there and then they also Hid the rear back box when I asked them… perfect and about £300 incuding removing the rear cat they have places all over the UK

About £250 but that was nearly 5 years ago. Fitted by Kingswinford Tyres in the midlands but it was a ‘Powerflow’ system. That have dealers/fitters in many places.

Wow guys, thanks a lot! I had no idea that they made custom made exhausts!

Have already emailed Longlife and PowerFlow for a price quote. Hopefully they have something similar to this

Thanks a lot, will let you know how it goes.

Hi guys,

I’ve contacted both companies, one of them has an injured technician and is unable to make the parts while the other hasnt replied. Am really running short of time as I’ll be leaving the uk at the end of the month and would be bringing my car along with me!

Any one has any recommendations?
Twin Pipe, 78mm, Raspy sound but not too loud.
Will be a bonus if it has a butterfly valve (Varex) for volume control.

Thanks,
Jiv

Try revolution247 for a butterfly valve

Racing beat are HERE

Hi guys,

First off, thanks a lot for all the help. I’ve spoken to the three companies.

Powerflow – no reply from both of the nearest branches.

Longlife- quoted 450 pounds for a dual exit system. (was advised to forget the
butterfly valve system)

3rd Company quoted me 449 for a Fox Dual exit system.

I’ll look around before deciding sometime this week. Thanks again.

I’ll be leaving the country for 2 years sometime around the 15th of
August and would appreciate some advice.

 1. Is there anything I should do to prepare the car for its 2 year hibernation?

2) I would like to hit the tracks atleast once before I leave, as a
newbie who has never been to one, which would you recommend? Something simple
and not too pricey if possible. Would like to try a few runs with a friend.

3) Finally, I will be getting a car when I get to the new country. These are
the cars I’m considering, listed in order of preference! Which would you guys
recommend?

a) Mazda RX7 FD

b) Mazda RX7 FC

c) AE86

d) 180sx Silvia

e) Mercedes SLK

f) any 3 series bmer?

g) Isuzu Piazza (the old version, heard its really unreliable and hard to
obtain parts)

h) Toyota Supra/ Skyline

Thanks a lot guys! Really appreciate the help!

PS: How reliable are the rx7s? FC and FD! and the AE86?

Provided fuel is cheap enough and you can source a decent one with good compression both hot and cold I’d go for the FD! Failing that a Supra (TT of course) or a tuned 86!

Mick288!

Fuel is pretty cheap! Malaysia!

FD is about 65k -75k
FC around 30k

I found an ae86 Trueno for 15k (negotiable), but in terrible condition. (internals messed up, engine has been swapped to an SR20DET),body in need of paint, turbo seems to be missing!

I’m tempted to get the FD, but am really worried about how reliable it is, the 65k version has twin turbo and the 75k has a single turbo. Will be working in a law firm and have to maintain my ‘image’, which makes the ae86 a dangerous choice.
