Exhausts for Mk2

Hi there

This is my first post. I’ve just bought myself a 10th Anniversary Edition MX5 and the exhaust is on it’s last legs (it needs mid section as well as rear silencer!). Can anybody recommend a replacement. Ideally I’d like something that sounds good, looks great and gives the car a tad more power. I’d be really grateful as I don’t know where to start.

Cheers  [:D]

Hi Andy

I’m sure you’ll get lots of replies on here about which one is the best etc…!!

I’ll start the ball rolling by recommending Larini…I’ve got a Dual exit on my car and a single on my wifes California.

The single is a different sound to the twin,

Good quality, good looks and a great, great sound, they can also supply the whole system…but,…expensive[:(]

e-mail them for details.

Larini Duals

I’ve also had a Racing Beat single pipe on my car, superb quality, but not too loud, just a bit louder than stock…

As for power increase,Larini claim that a few more gee gees can be obtained, but I think to prove it you’d need to dyno it before and after [:O]

I think it’s a case of going to a few meets and looking and listening to a few others…!

Hope that helps

Thanks, your dual looks great but I don’t like the sound of ‘expensive’ as I’ve spent a bit on it already. Interested in the Racing Beat single pipe. Is it best to mail order it and then get my local garage to fit it or can you recommend anywhere?

Cheers  [:D]

Hi  Andy

It’s best to shop around, find the best price and buy it mail order, and, if you’re confident enough to do it yourself, save some money, it’s only 2 nuts to undo it, and remove it from the rubber mounts. Give the nuts a good soak in WD40 before you try and undo them…[:O]

You’d need a new gasket when you replace the box (available from MX5 Parts http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/1188 )

Why not have a look on the MX5 Parts website…?

They’ve got a rear box like the Racing Beat one at a lower cost… http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/1115

If the centre pipe needs replacing, you could combine the rear box with a Larini centre section pipe for a bit more Zoom Zoom…[:D]

That, you’d need to have fitted at an exhaust centre as the original centre pipe needs cutting to fit it.

Oh, by the way…MX5 Parts are doing free delivery on any purchase until 8th December…[:D]

Happy days…!!

Thanks Risingsun, MX5 Parts are just down the road from me so I’ll pop in over the weekend. Will the centre section from larini plus the rear silencer from MX5 Parts sort out my exhaust or will I need any other sections?

On a slightly different note, I’ve noticed that when the car is running there is watery oily residue sitting in the end of the exhaust tip - is this normal?

Thanks again for your advice.

Hi Andy

MX5 parts are only open Mon - Fri…so no trip to them over the weekend to spend your money…[::(]

There are only 3 sections of the exhaust, this consists of the exhaust manifold (downpipe), the centre section and the rear box.

The best way to find out what parts you’d need is to take the car to your local friendly exhaust centre and get them to put it on the ramp to inspect it, but don’t commit to buying anything…[;)]

By doing that, you’ll know what bits you need to change. If the centre resonator box is blowing and the cat is ok, then it might be more cost effective to get the Larini centre pipe and cut out the resonator box and save the cat.

Lets hope that the only bit that does need changing is the rear box…[Y]

As for the watery, oily residue…I’m not sure without seeing it, has it done a high mileage, is it using oil, is it losing coolant, does it smoke when it starts from cold?          Does it dry out after a run ?

Could it be condensation in the system if you only do short runs…?

Hope you go ok with it, let me know how you get on…!

Ian

Don’t be mincer and just buy the Larini, it’s easily the best.

Andy  [:D]

Wow…well done Andy
What the one in my previous post…?
It was in my “watched items” and yep, it did go for a good price [Y]

I’m sure you’ll be well pleased with your new purchase, especially the sound…they improve with age as they “bed in” to a mellow sound[H]
Let me know what you think about it when it’s fitted.

Heres my exhaust which I’ve got for my mk2.5 sport from MX5parts last year… Excellent in my opinion…

£179, great sound and looks great

Hi Rising Sun

Do you remember you recommeded the centre section by Larini - don’t suppose you’ve got any other e-bay links for me that would be compatible with the rear exhaust I’ve now got.

Cheers

Andy

Keep an eye on this seller Andy…seems to have a few Larini bits…[;)]

Thanks Rising Sun

I’m glad you suggested that as I spotted it when looking looking for my rear silencer but wasn’t sure whether it would be compatible with what I’d got.

I’ll put in a bid and then fingers crossed.

Cheers

Andy

Ok, good luck with the auction [Y]

Don’t forget though, this will make the exhaust sound noisier…[^o)]

Ian

Oh!

Which one do I need to give it a meaty, understated sound? Or is that not the idea?!?

Cheers

Andy
