Exhausts

Ok so here I am, the Newbie to the club with a first post (on any forum) and needing some advice.

I am now the proud owner of a 2002 Mk2.5 (apparently) 1.6 MX5.  I love just about everything about her except she just doesn’t really sound like a sports car!  I have looked at various stainless steel exhaust systems and would like advice as to whether there is any real advantage in fitting a twin exhaust to replace the current single pipe.  I’m not too bothered about power increases (although a couple of extra horses would be welcome) but I definitely want a sportier note.  MX5 Parts offer a single exit pipe (Part No. S1222) at an attractive price so does any one have experience of that particular item?

Any assistance gratefully received.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum, enjoy your car

Hi and Welcome

I’ve got a Cobalt on my MK3.5 and love the sound. MK2 owners that I have spoken too or read about also give favourable reports for Cobalt.

Richard.

There is no performance benefit to twin exhausts. Most drone a bit.You have to cut the bumper, and hope whoever does the cutting doesn’t mess things up; I’ve seen awful cutting on many cars. If running a revised intake and cat pipe, a twin exhaust will make your bumper twise as dirty.

I have a cobalt on my mk1 along with a 421 manifold and induction kit have a listen to it below
P.S listen to it on decent speakers

I fitted an Mx5parts single exit SS back box on my Mk2, it sounded much better than the standard box, sporty tone without being too boomy or annoying the neighbours type of sound, perfect for me.

The Cobalts are good too, currenty have one on my Mk3, they are twin exit as standard on those. I can’t comment on the single exit Mk2 box, never had or heard one in action.

I fitted this rear box to a standard system on my Mk2.5 1.8 Icon and achieved what you are looking for. A good rasp but not too loud.

Unfortunately, I see it is currently out of stock, but there may not be too long a wait.

Thanks to all who responded for your welcome and advice. Seems the single exit route would be the way to go, to avoid chopping bodywork and also keeping the look as original.

Hello and welcome to the club. hope you get the sound you want.

Again thanks for your responses, now |I have another question.

I have been doing a bit more research on the interweb and have found a company called Longlife that design and fit bespoke SS systems.   Does anyone out there have any knowledge / experience of them and / or their products?

Hi Nigel

Switched my 2003 1.8 to the stainless sold by MX5 Parts
see http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/stainless-steel-exhaust-parts-single-exit-mk2-25-p-1115.html currently at £199 but got it on Promo and National rally discount in 2014 and free delivery! Bargain

Exhaust note much better than std without being uncomfortable, so much that wife said it is much louder.
