Factory Front Fog Light Wiring Mk1

I’m looking to fit some of the original Mazda front projector fog lights to my UK MX5, I like the look of them, although they will probably never get used they obviously need to work. The ones I have are off a Eunos and are yellow in colour, I also have the original switch that I was going to fit in the position that is currently occupied by the dash dimmer.

I’ve studied some U.S Miata diagrams for the wiring, and it looks like the postive feed for them is taken from the ouput from the main headlight relay and then this is switched through the actual fog light switch. No separate relay for the fogs? Is the switch realy up to switching this amount of current?

Is there an indicator light in the clock pod for front fogs like there is for the rear fog? If not I will also have to add an indicator to the switch I guess.

Any help appreciated, wiring diagrams, wiring loom locations, does anyone have a Eunos with factory front fogs who could PM some pics of the wiring?

Thanks in advance.

Dan

Hi Clive, you can find links to the circuit diagrams in the Technical / FAQ area of the Garage Forum.

Hopefully this thread will come up with someone who has already done it or at least knows their way around the front fog light wiring. I’m of an Electronics background so I can sort this relatively easily and really know what is required. I just want to establish the best possible locations to hook into the loom with new wiring and how Mazda actualy wire them up. This will help me make the wiring I add look original and factory installed. I can’t believe that the standard front fog switch is used without a relay as the Miata diagram seems to suggest.

I know some guys have used the double switch unit for front and rear fogs, this would stop me having to do away with the dash dimmer to make space.

The logos are different for front and rear fog light switches. The front switch has the light beam pointing down and towards the left when looking at the switch. The rear switch has the beam pointing to the right and horizontal.

Both are green illuminated with the dashboard backlighting. For the Eunos you will need a rear switch with an indicator light within it so you are warned when the fog light is on http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/products_id/129.

The UK model has the rear fog on warning light situated in the instrument pod, hence the UK switch does not have the indicator light within it. You could buy a UK switch off of eBay and wire in you own warning ligh though.

I’m not sure if it is a requirment to have an indicator light for front fogs though, it probably is.

Had a look at it, but I don’t think it is based on a factory install but I need to study it some more.

Under my bonnet of my UK MX5 in the fuse box on the drivers side, there is an empy fuse postion space where the fog lamp 15A fuse is located on a Eunos. I also understand that there is indeed a fog lamp relay and this is mounted on a bracket just below the clip that holds the bonnet prop in place when folded down. Have a look and see if yours has the fuse intact and the relay. In the fuse box on mine there is a battery +  feed in postion for the fuse, but nothing on the other side.

Anyone have a part no. for the front fog relay?  Or better still some wiring diagrams for the Eunos (not Miata) showing the wiring?

Cheers Dan

Come on chaps, there must be someone out there who has done this?

Details of the relay used would be a start.

In anticipation. Dan

I will dig some info out buddy on how to do this and what to use,(You will like this Clive…) i will blow the dust off and consult my hong kong book of kung fuWink.

And this is for a Mk 1 yes?

Thanks Wayne, your a good un. I’m thinking of buying a part ready loom off flea bay and modifying it to suit. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380258196796&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I can modify this loom and add on the required crimps etc as I have all the tooling. It would just be nice to know the factory wiring route / layout, where the loom comes through the bulkhead (probably drivers side) and the type of relay used. Rod Grangers Enthusiast’s Manual for the 1.8 shows a picture of the relay on page 7:23. It looks to me like a cylindrical metal can type that is probably waterproof or waterproofed its definately not your run of the mill 30A relay.

Clive, I just been pulling a apart the front fog light switch I have as I need to replace the little filament wheat lamp inside for the panel lighting (bought some lamps off flea bay). I noticed you have pulled apart a switch before from your posting about rewiring your rear fog switch (close studing of your switch pin-number pic). I’m thinking of adding a “tell-tale” lamp or LED to the switch whist I have it apart. Have you ever managed to separate the front rocker part of the switch from the main body? I guess it pivots on a lug on the main body, but I don’t what a muller it by prising it apart in the wrong place!! I’m pretty nifty with a soldering iron, so it shouldn’t be a problem to add a Lamp or LED and drill through the front face of the rocker to mount it. Dan

Sorry Wayne, yes all in relation to the Mk1

Hi Clive

Yeah the night illumination has gone on by HRW switch is well, so I went for the filament lamps and will re-use the green condoms off the old bulb. Well I’ve got the switch stripped down and managed to get the front rocker part separated from the switch body, I reckon I can get a “tell tale” LED mounted in the same position as the MX5parts Rear Fog switch with tell tale. I’ve got some 2mm green lighthouse style LEDs ordered to mount inside the switch. I’ll post up some piccys once done, providing its a success Wink

I’ll keep an eye out for your pics. Cheers Dan

 Dan

I have found some OE Mazda front fog/spot light looms which are plug and play???

 Hi Wayne,

You muat have a den full of stuff!

How much do want for them? Are they off a Mk1?

Cheers Dan

 Yes Dan

It is for the Mk 1,plugs straight into the connection on the drivers side in the engine bay, conect your lights up,plug a switch in to the block, and you will have light, relay is already on there.

PM sent buddyThumbs up

 Nice one Clive.

Did you take one of the plug at the dash that connects to the OE switchWink

There should be another block behind there, with 4 spade connections?

The white block in the pic looks like the later HRW block connection?

 Hi Clive,

Thanks for the pictures. I don’t think my motor has the white connector block under the drivers wing as you pictured, I’ll have a dig around in the daylight tomorrow.

How many wires are in that connector under the wing? I guess just two wires, one wire will be the +12V from the 15A Fog fuse going to the one side of the relay contact, the other wire will be the switched +12V from the fog light switch to energise the relay coil and close the contacts.

The fatter red wire will be the fused 15A feed to the relay, the green/yellow wire will be the trigger from the switch.

Does the pin in your HRW connector that triggers the fog relay happen to be the green/yellow wire? The later HRW switches I’ve seen are a double type switch, the right hand switch is the HRW and the left hand one is usually blank. See ebay listing http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MAZDA-MX5-EUNOS-MK1-HRW-HEATED-REAR-WINDOW-SWITCH-/180638469956?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2a0ee44f44

Perhaps Mazda do a combined front fog and HRW switch?

Talking about this kind of switch for a Mk 1

Wayne, thanks for the front foglight loom, its now all done and fitted. I picked up a positve supply from the vacant fuse positon in the engine bay fuse box as my UK car was missing the front fog supply and switch part of the loom. The vacant fuse positon on a UK car is the postion where the 15A front fog fuse is fitted on a Eunos. I used an “Add a circuit” fuse unit like this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MINI-FUSE-ADD-CIRCUIT-PACK-2-/250722197314?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item3a60351f42 to pick up a feed, it did the job a treat without disturbing any of the factory loom.

The only other thing I then needed was a feed for the actual front fog switch. I picked up the sidelight/dashlight feed from the rear fog switch and used that to trigger the front fog relay, so the front fog lights work when the sidelights are on. I have fitted a Eunos front fog lamp switch for now, this switch doesn’t have a “tell tale” light on it which is an MOT requirement. So I have got hold of a Mk2.5 switch which is the double switch unit for front and rear fog lights. The rear fog light part is momentary, so I have bought a Durite latching relay for that. I’ve managed to obtain the exact connector for the rear of the Mk2.5 switch from Japan. Just waiting for it to turn up before I start the wiring. I intend to make an adaptor type loom to connect to the original rear fog switch connector, that way there is no hacking about or disturbance to the factory wiring and the mod can be removed easily and put back to standard if required.
