Failed MOT - Excessively corroded brake pipe

Does anyone out there know roughly what it should cost to replace a brake pipe (nearside rear) on my MK2 which has just failed its MOT.

Am actually rather pleased with the MOT - I consider this to be quite good for a car that is nearly 11 years old now!

Thanks.

Hi as a mechanic/tester I would  say a fair price at any local garage would be approx 1hr labour charge as the cost to make up a pipe is literally only pennies. Have you been quoted?

No idea on cost but an hour sounds reasonable. Putting new callipers on mine we noticed some corrosion on a couple of lines. It only took minutes to bend up a couple of new ones but transferring the fittings, flaring the ends, getting everything to line up neatly then bleeding the system took the time. I was surprised how brittle the corroded pipes had become, so was pleased ‘we’ (being my mate Steve) spotted them.

Hi there.  No I have not been quoted.  I actually work for Kirklees Council so I was lucky enough to get a discount of £10 on the MOT (£40 as opposed to £50) when I took it to their MOT test centre.  The guy there has recommended a garage to me.  If, as you say, it’s one hour then it should be, what, say £50 labour and £10-£15 for the pipe?

Thanks a lot.

Parts cost should be minimal. Mazda brake pipe unions are only 40p each from Aspley Auto Parts on Firth Street. A few feet of cunifer pipe won’t be expensive either.

Mazda sell ready made up and bent brake pipes at a very reasonable price, for neatness and speed of fitting you can’t beat them!

Mazda pipes are steel too aren’t they? I’m always a little worried copper pipes are going to pick up a bit of damage, certainly the copper brake pipes I’ve got running through the cabin have picked up some scratches and bends from passengers.

Sorry I know this is an old thread …

My mx5 mk1 has corroded brake pipes and I was told by the local MX5 dealer that it would cost £600 to replace them, now given that they are fitting a new caliper at the same time and I’m being charged £312.06 for that I can’t help but think that the £600 is a ‘bit’ steep.

Anyone know if this is realistic?

£600!

Wow. I made copper pipes for my RX7 a few months ago and it took less than £30 in parts and maybe 4 hours of mucking about - so £200 even at dealer prices. £600 seems an insane amount of money.

I know that their hourly rate is £75 (I know someone wo works in the sales dept) and I know I can get the parts off mx5parts for just over £30 which is why I can’t understand where £600 comes from

Just had 1 done on mine for £25 including the labour

Ask the garage for a breakdown of the quote. It’ll either be funny or horrific.

In the end I didn’t go ahead with the repair at the garage.

Does anyone know where I can get brake pipes for a mk1 1.6 with ABS? mx5parts only state non-ABS pipes on their website.

Enough said?

Not really, as when I checked with my local mazda dealer and with mx5parts both said that I needed the brake pipes with ABS. Neither of which stocked them, so I was just asking for some friendly advice niggle

I wouldn’t expect a dealer to stock them though but they should be able to order them in from Mazda. If Mazda don’t make them anymore then you’ll have to make them yourself.

From what I can see you got some friendly advice from a Mazda-trained technician.

Mazda dealers keep relatively few parts in stock for Mk1 models, but they can get a surprisingly large variety of parts from the distribution centre in Belgium in a matter of days. If you cannot wait a few days for a genuine Mazda brake line then a decent service garage or motor factors will be able to make one to the correct length in Cunifer pipe or similar, the unions are standard M10 x 1.0 fittings and are widely available.

Sorry know this is an old thread, but anyone had any luck getting hold of ABS mk 1 brake pipes, mine failed mot on them today and im struggling.

Have you actually checked them yourself? My car is 1992 and still has it’s original brake pipes on. Have a look and see if they are being a bit picky and looking for work. Last year against by better judgment a Toyota dealer said by brake pipes, on my RAV 4,  had corroded and needed replacement and as this is my main car I let them do it without checking first. When I got the car back I checked them and not all had been replaced and what I couldn’t understand was that pipes in the same vicinity were not the slightest bit corroded. I think I was ripped off, so much so I don’t deal with them anymore particularly when the also told me that my rear brake pads could do with changing but as they weren’t a cause of MOT failure I didn’t let them replace them. I replaced them myself 3 years later when they did need replacing.  You could take them to another garage and ask them specifically whether they would pass an MOT. They may be helpful if they think you will have it MOTd there.
