- My model of MX-5 is: __NA
- I’m based near: __Burnley
- I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __Anyone who has fitted one of these kits, or has the technical ability to help me diagnose and treat my idle problems.
I had one of these kits fitted to my 1996 Eunos 1.8 S-Special type 2 last year. It’s cost me an absolute fortune, and hasn’t run properly since.
After much emailing to Tom in the States, he reckons that the IAC isn’t connected correctly.
I’ve booked the car back in with the garage that did the install, but I’m scared that I’ll get another huge bill, with no outcome.
Any help or recommendations?
A different garage, perhaps?
Hi, you might need to provide more information. How is the idle bad? Too low/too high? Lean/rich? Moving up and down?
Ok, here’s a full description;
When cold, car will fire up straight away, but will not idle unless throttle is pressed.
When hot, car will idle, but after approximately 20 seconds idle speed will drop and idle but not smoothly.
Rev engine lightly, will repeat above.
Turn on A/C, engine will stall.
It’s obvious that the ECU isn’t able to make adjustments to the idle.
Also makes a whistling noise, but can’t trace where from.
Also smells of fumes inside car, even with top down.
Just seen this. I hope you got it sorted. It’s similar to a problem I had with mine. Vacuum leaks seem to be the bane of Fast Forward installation. If I recall (was several years ago) the pipes were stuck onto the little connector block in the wrong order.
Well I got the vacuum leak sorted, and some parts fitted that hadn’t been installed.
The engine idles ok now, but it still won’t cold start as it should. I still need to give it some throttle for a couple of minutes before it will idle.
And it still cuts out if the AC is turned on.
Still sounds like a vaccum problem. It’s a wonderful kit when it’s working, but the problem is always that the person fitting it has never done it before (in the UK at least). I wish I could recommend the person who did mine, but he fitted the crank pulley wrong resulting in it coming off at 70mph and a new engine!
Blimey, that’s not good.
Tom makes it sound like a plug and play kit, but the company that fitted mine said that wouldn’t take on another one.
It’s ended up costing me a fortune. They couldn’t get it running properly, and I had to get some replacement parts from Tom.
Yes, I had a love hate relationship with mine in the end if I’m honest. I think it would have been different if we were in the states, but the lack of a specialist to support them in the UK makes life a bit stressful.
I agree. Lack of support available in the UK.
