P0171 means the engine is running lean
A number of possible causes
1) precat lambda sensor
2) air leaks
3) dirty mass air flow sensor
4) Low fuel pressure - injector or fuel flow problem(pump/Filter)
I would have hoped you would get at least one more error code with this to help pinpoint.
When I bought the car it had a engine management system light on and the seller got his
mechanics to check it and replaced the injectors when I received the car it seemed all
fixed. It looks as if I will have to take it back but really enjoy driving this car so
was hoping I could find the fault myself but it gives quite a list. I have a basic code
reader which comes up with this code .
Ah, the later Icon - a MK2.5 then 2005?
Would be easy enough to try a used lambda sensor to see if that’s the problem but to be honest doesn’t feel right. Lambda should produce a code and more likely to lead to rich running.
MAF very easy to try.
The previous owner should be happy to get involved here - better to sort the problem out than get the car returned.
I Know this is an awkward fault to diagnose but none of the possible causes are cause to abandon the car as far as I can tell.
More important is the absence of rust, particularly in the front chassis rails.
Sorry to hear you are having problems with the car but hello and welcome to the club all the same. Stick with it, the car will be worth it once you have it running smoothly.
Seeing that the fuel injectors have been replaced, I’d check that all the O rings are intact and correctly seated, where the injectors fit into the inlet tract. An air leak could easily occur there.
Edit: I’d also check the spark plugs to see if one cylinder is running weaker, or all are weak. Also check all the inlet tract joints for possible air leaks.
One of my sons lives in your part of the world Devon he works for
Nationwide so any rust problems I will get him to fix .It has a minor
rust problem drivers side rear under seal but not to bad every were
else okay. Do like this car .
