Finding an electrical fault

Hi all, not an MX-5 issue but it does cross over. Moderators if it’s not allowed please delete the post.

My Triumph TR6 has started blowing the fuse which protects the temp gauge, fuel gauge, indicators and brake lights. Not being electrically minded I haven’t got a clue how to start looking for the problem apart from wiggling the wires and waiting for the fuse to blow or looking for frayed wires.
I replaced the fuse yesterday and it was fine for around 10 miles or so but then blew again.
Can anyone give me some suggestions for how to find the problem please?
Thanks Mike

I’m not overly electrically minded but I think if I had this problem I’d start with looking at the lighting and wiring connected to that fuse. I’ve watched many a classic car restoration, barn find type shows on YouTube that usually have wiring connection problems, earthing problems especially there.
It’ll be a systematic approach I imagine, take each part at a time wiring and the fitments and work through it👍

Check the little plug-in voltage regulator shared by these items. It was a common unreliable item back in the 1960s and 1970s when I worked on this era of UK cars.

If the fuse does not blow again for a few miles while the regulator is removed, than either it (most likely) or the temp or fuel senders or their wires (usually the bits under the car!) have the problem.

Be careful!
