I have just bought a standard mk2 steering wheel of fleabay as its much better condition than mine.
The new one is of a 2004 and mine is a 2000, will the airbag transfer over using the same bolts and fittings etc?? I cant see why they would be any different as it is the same 4 spoke steering wheel.
Also is it dangerous or tricky to install my airbag into the new one.
Yep, I replaced my 2003 std wheel with a 99/00 Nardi airbag wheel. Wiring plugged straight into the older wheel
Disconnect the battery before doing any work, and leave it for 10-15 minutes to let any electrickery dissipate
Edit: Just noticed you’re replacing just the airbag, the airbag on my 03 wheel was held on with two bolts from the back of the wheel, then just pulled out. If the wheel/airbag is the same shape, it should fit okay
I wouldn’t have thought so, on the day I swapped my wheel, I had the thing off a few times as I buggered the spinny thing that connects all the electrics. The one that came with the wheel wouldn’t fit on my steering column for some reason, so I ended up with a '99 wheel and an '03 spinny thing (can’t for the life of me remember the proper name) and everything works as it should - horn, airbag light + indicator cancelling. If you’re only changing the airbag, you won’t have to touch the spinny thing
Now I think about it, it might be two posi/phillips screws keeping the airbag on. You might be able to undo them by unlocking the steering and turning the wheel to gain access to them, I took the cowling off the column - another couple of phillips screws
Undo three scews on the under side of the plastic shroud/cowling on the column and prise apart carefully
This gives you better access to the two screws/bolts on the back of the wheel that hold the airbag on, pull the airbag out and disconnect the two wire connections (horn and airbag)
Loosen, but don’t remove the big nut in the middle of the wheel
Using the palms of your hands at the 9 and 3 o’clock position, hit the back of the wheel - you may need to alternate to 12 and 6 o’clock position - until it is loose (this is why you don’t remove the nut, it keeps your nose intact and your teeth where they should be)
The wires should feed through the wheel as you remove it, and you’ll see the spinny thing I metioned before, best not to remove this as it’s a pig to reset for indicator cancelling
