And the ‘tip’ is?

Fed up wth the feeble horns I bought some Ring Compact Air horns from Halfords for just over £22.
Many similar ones on eBay for £13 upwards but I thought I would pay for the brand name and Halfords customer service should it be needed.
I noted from YouTube there are two methods of fitting by replacing one of the originals.
!) from underneath by prising down the undertray, and
2) from the front by removing the complete bumper.

Well, I could not do method one with my fat hands so resolved to do method 2.
I started with the NS wheel arch liner to get to the top inside bumper bolts but stopped right there.
I realised that right next to the fog lamp assembly there was a big space and there was also a convenient mounting hole.
I made up a simple bracket and fitted the horns easily there using the mounting bolt as the earth.
The live went to the original horn feed which was no problem getting to.
A quick change of Fuse 2 from 10 to 20 amp and it was good to go.
If you fancy a horn change I hope this helps.

That is a top tip as well! Thanks! :+1:

If the upload thingamabobber lets you attach videos / audio clips, any chance of a soundbite? I’ve always rather liked the idea of truck horns on a tiny car. #innerChild

Are we confident that the existing wiring will take 20amps?

It is good practice to use a relay directly from the battery for the new horns with an appropriate inline fuse and use the existing feed as the ‘trigger’.

This is a really good point @Mad_Malc, and raises the question in my head, errr how does that work then? :joy:

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that I really need to get much better at electricity than my current bang-ouch-help “strategy”. Adding relays to the list of need-to-know-before-reassembly. thanks

The ND has 2 horns so when I replaced them with a single Stebel Nautilus i used both power supplies for it.

It would not let me load a sound bite. Wrong format apparently.
Anyway it is loud!

The OE relay is rated at 20 amps so a 20 amp fuse is fine to use the circuit as is.

The new horns take 17 amps.

Just a thought but is there a legal limit as to how loud your hon can be?

I’m satisfied with the stock one on my MK2, it’s wy louder than the one on the company Vauxhall Insignia - which I’m trying to get rid of due to the jump in tax!

I have changed horns twice. Once on my ND1 and then again on my ND2.
ND1 was front bumper off. Made the job very easy but took three times longer faffing with the bumper.
When I changed them on my ND2 I took the o/s wheel arch lining out and the undertray and worked through the grill. Much, much easier :+1:.
I connect each horn to the original cable and added an earth cable to the fixing bolt.
Job done :+1:.
The horns are much louder but not excessively so. Only used in anger once up to now :rage:.
Mine were Hella’s.
