Fitting rear Dashcam possible?

I have a MX-5 25TH Anniversary. It has the retractable roof at a push of a button which is great!

I would like to buy a front and rear dashcam. Not sure if it is possible to fit rear dashcam… will the wire get in the way of the roof mechanism folding down in the summer?

Perhaps attach it between the seats where the wind blocker is. Adjust it for correct height roof up or down.
Folding down in Summer? Should be down whenever possible.
I wouldn’t risk putting it anywhere near the roof mechanism just in case.
Just an opinion. :+1:

Edit- Just Googled “MX5 Rear Dash Cams” (Images) and that should perhaps give you some ideas?
Not the most eye pleasing, but I guess you can’t have it all.

Thanks for your feedback. Have got Road Angel Halo Pro so will take a look when it arrives. Makes sense to attach it to the back of the windbreaker.
Cheers

No problem. I’ve got a Garmin Mini at the front and you’ve prompted me to perhaps fit one to the rear in due course.:+1:

Wind-breaker is probably the best place for ordinary dash-cams, but prone to vibration, and might block some rear viewing.

Seat hoop is much more stable, but with limited space. Check the clearance between the potential positions for the camera extremities and the moving bits of roof and seat-back. Not all will be short enough to fit.

Five years ago I tried fitting my Mobius within the loop behind the seat, but found my NC did not allow quite enough safety margin on front-to-back space for camera and plug to clear the PRHT bits if the seat was fully back.

Fortunately some of the more modern ball cameras are a lot shorter and cooler in operation. Then just finding/making a suitable mount is the only problem.

I’m interested to hear what you might end up with.

I have mine attached to the wind breaker, offset a little so it’s not blocking my rear view. Vibration is acceptable and the view from the camera is decent with the hood up or down. Mounting to the roll hoops will severely restrict the view with the roof up.

I have the same camera but the ND2 RF you will have enough wiring to Position the rear camera on the back of your windbreaker the wiring can run down the front window seal on the passengers side along the bottom of the Door/floor cill up and around the back of the passengers seat… all the wiring can be hidden to the blocker with a little wiring too spare

Nextbase with the rear camera physically attached to the forward camera.

Reading the thread I was inspired and I thought about buying an action camera / dashcamera. If I’m honest I want more of an action camera rather a dash camera but I was looking to buy one that perhaps can do both? I was considering the nextbase 622gw but reading reviews people have said the app is useless and the device stops working/freezes/locks files and makes the videos inaccessible. I looked at Garmin Dash Cam 66W (similar specs to the nextbase 522gw that has no stabilization ). the roadangel (bulky and no image stabilization ).

Then I thought if I really want an action camera to look at gopro, lol… only to find out that the hero 9 is 350 ish and the hero 10 450 ish (and at the moment I aint prepared to spend that much for a small camera for a bit of fun). If anyone knows are there any recommended alternatives to a gopro - to have image stabilization & decent video quality but not mega money?

Thanks… I got the Road Angel Halo Pro I will let you know how I get on fitting it when we get a sunny clear day at a weekend hopefully before Christmas!

Well… they got to me… just bought a gopro 10 :joy:

£379 for the hero10 including extra battery and accessories was good enough for me .

Also found a web shop that does have some pretty good deals

On my ND.

Homemade holder out of a wickes screwdriver display holder.
Very visible to people behind me. Roof up or down it sits there and tells people they’re being watched when they get too close.

I fitted a rear dash cam to the 30th anniversary rf. I stuck the camera rear facing on the wind breaker and ran cable behind passenger seat.

Researching Nextbase for a rear one for my daughters car and was going to get her the rear wired one.
However, this Nextbase one would seem to fit the bill rather nicely for some perhaps also wanting a rear one.
Just clicks into place on the front one.
No idea how obtrusive it might be, but would prefer this than fitting something in the wind blocker area. :man_shrugging:

Fitted the Nextbase 322GW with the small rear view camera attached on our Mazda3 (Year 2017) and get a really good rear view recording that I consider even better than the front recording. However on my MX5 ND1 soft top I believe that if the camera is mounted up beside and close to the rear view mirror unfortunately if the passenger sun visor is down then the rear view camera view is blocked.
