Flat battery question - Yuasa YBX3000

Hi everyone,

How long typically will a battery last if not used much? I’m pretty sure the problem is down to my own stupidity, so I just want someone to confirm I’m stupid!

Around 6 months ago my battery was changed by the AA to a Yuasa YBX3000. The old battery wasn’t holding a charge as I wasn’t using the car very much. So this continues - me not using the car - the battery going flat. Next Mr AA man comes and charges the battery, tells me off and goes on his way.

So now the battery is flat again. Have I killed it?

And I even have a battery charger!

Thanks

I think I must have done the same as you and killed my battery by not topping the charge up when the car is not used often. Of course winter will kill an already weak battery, most likely won’t do a new battery any good either if it’s stays in a discharged state for long.

I got myself a trickle charger and if the car goes a week without use I top the battery up. If it’s really cold I charge it more often. Some leave their chargers on 24/7 in winter if the car is garaged for long periods, I suggest you do the same or at least charge at regular intervals.

The smart chargers don’t require you to disconnect the battery either, do it in situ.

Possibly and possibly not.A modern battery that is flat, can take over 48 hrs to recharge from slow smart trickle charger. Also when a battery runs flat,it can lose approx 10% of its available capacity to hold a good charge.Alternatively, there is a problem with the car causing a battery drain.
