Can anybody tell me what the weight of a stock 1998 Mk2 1.8 litre flywheel is please?
21lbs
Many thanks, DFR.
The 95 R-Ltd flywheel weighs in at 17.5 lbs, so not a huge reduction when compared with aftermarket lightweight flywheels, which come in at 8 - 13.5 lbs). Do you know the weight of the Mk2 RS flywheel perchance?
the r-ltd flywheel and rs-ltd flywheel should weigh 14lbs
same with the mk2 rs models
Hmmm… I acquired a R-Ltd engine recently and the flywheel (without the clutch assembly) weighs 17.5lbs, which appears, therefore, to be a tad heavier than it should be
Thanks for the info DFR
is it possible its an oem 1.6 flywheel ?
i dont really do 1.6’s so dont know the weight on a standard 1600 flywheel
It is a 1.8 engine and, as far as I am aware, totally standard. Curious
Thanks AT
Thought id share this.
I had a 1.8 flywheel given to me when i was chaging my clutch and rear end.
I didnt want to pay silly money for a lightend flywheel, or have one that is stupidly lighter that might cause me idle issues with the SC (Debated subject)
So before skimming, the standard flywheel was 9.1Kg and after some shaving and balancing its now 6.9Kg. I asked the company not to go lower than this figure, they did say that LOADS more can be safley removed from the flywheel if required but that was my personal target. The wieght removed was from around the balance ring so its safe to do so.
Cost was £60 skimmed and balanced.
That’s really interesting and helpful; many thanks Steve How was the drivability of your car affected by the lightening?
Ken
The pickup seemed alot quicker, the revs also dropped away quicker too- Think if i had taken any more off i would have needed to adjust the dashpot to prevent stalls but mine is fine
I had the work done at www.apiengines.com (where i had my engine rebuilt).
I have found 3 different part numbers for Roadster 1.8 flywheels:
BPE8-11-500; which is the same part number quoted for US Miatas, pre1995. The covers VIN NA8C-100001-299999.
BPR7-11-500: this part number is common to Roadsters NA8C-300000-399999, which Mazda calls Series 1.5, and Roadsters NA8C-400000-, which is the final Series 2 Mk1. This number matches the numbers quoted for 1995+ Miatas. Strangely, there is no seperate part number given for RS-Limiteds and R-Limiteds. These cars fall within the Series 1.5 batch of cars. It seems all Series 1.5 cars may already have the lighter flywheel.
NBs also used this flywheel, on 5 speeds and 6 speeds. This TSB refers to this flywheel on US spec Mk2.5s:
http://www.miata.net/garage/tsb/sb05-002.02.html
That all seems straightforward, but for NB1 1.8 Roadsters (ie. Mk2s), another flywheel is also included: BPV-11-500. Anyone with access to such things tell me which model this was supposed to be fitted to?
My 97 UK Mk1 1.8 certainly had a different design of flywheel to the
94 Eunos V-Spec one that I fitted when the starter ring came loose then fell off, the RS Limited flywheel in my V-Spec seemed absolutely identical to the V-Spec flywheel when I had them both on the bench next to eachother.
Am pretty sure there was no difference between 94`V-Spec and RS Limited units.
