Just had a letter from Footman James. It reads:
['Unfortunately Footman James does not currently have an insurer to cater for your needs. Due to a change in underwriting terms we are therefore unable to offer any terms for the forthcoming year and you will need to obtain cover from an alternative insurer from renewal date.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused in this instance and confirm that we review the Insurers that we use on a regular basis. We hope that we are able to assist you in the future and that you will not hesitate to contact us with your insurance needs.’]
I phoned them and was told I had done nothing wrong and was, in fact, an ideal customer - full com with breakdown and never a claim. 58 years old. MK1 1.8, car garaged, postcode CR5. After-market air filter, stainless exhaust, poly-bushed, GAZ dampers and springs - and lowered. But their ‘hands were tied’ because of the underwriters they used.
Then I was asked if I would like a quote on my house insurance!
Has anyone else experienced this problem - and where does it leave Footman James as a recommended insurer for the MX5 Owners Club?
If Footman James can’t cover modded cars they should be ditched as the club insurer. That was always the major strength of the club insurance. I have been with them 8 years and never had problems, but I won’t be renewing if this is the case.
Hi There
I too have had problems. Had a Mk 3 until last year when I sold it,mistake! I have just bought a week ago a new 2oth Anniversery edition. For me its a second car but I’m over 50 ,clean licence and no accidents etc. Wanted them to give me matching 4 years ncb like AON used to do a year ago when I was insured with them, club scheme. . Footman James couldn’t even quote! Useless scheme now and mine was a standard car ,not modified.
I used Swifcover in the end, they insure my other car. They mirrored my ncb and dead cheap.
It would appear that the club scheme needs re-thinking!
Cheers
I have raised the OPs issue with the Clubs insurance advisor who can hopefully get FJ to look at this.
Had my renewal through today, it doesnt say anything about not covering modifications.
Just says to advise them if any changes have been made since my last renewal.
So, Im happy to renew with them, especially as they were over £200 cheaper than enyone else.
£393 for the year, protected NCD, guaranteed value, mileage limited to 10k includes breakdown cover and the usual stuff. And thats in a supposed dodgy M postcode.
Was a bit worried about what the renewal would be having read some posts about them.
i recently tried to get insurance for mine as it has had several modifications carried out and was only able to get a quote from richard egger insurance (linked to mazda on track) and luckily they were quite cheap as well £370 all mods declared and first 4 track days are free. 26 yr old 8yrs NCD bs postcode limited to 5000 miles a year, one condition was i get imobilser fitted
I went with FJ after trying half a dozen other companies who wouldn’t even quote because of it being an import or my postcode. FJ welcomed me with open arms and didn’t even ask about any mods, agreed value and unlimited mileage £465.
Just tell them…It’s not a modification, it’s an improvement… ? and laugh at them… club insurance scheme…hhhmmmmm…best not go there again, owners know how I feel about it on here
hello i just got footman james insurance and said all okay about my imported car even with the mods there they were cheaper and happy to help thanks john waterhouses

love the fact they dont insure the under 23’s just think it loses them so much money, must have paid out a small fortune in insurance costs over the years, but my dad been with them for 10 years on his bike and never had a problem with them
Must be the dodgy postcodes again…
