Forced induction on a MK2.5

soo. hi guys and gals.

im looking into my options for forced induction on the 5, both super charge and turbo charge, but i am struggling to find prices of kits now, there are some still knocking about for the MK1’s but i havent found much in the way of anything for the 2.5, its difficult for me to find out if it is even an option if i dont have any prices!

Which engine have you got - the 1.6 or the 1.8? Give 5speed a ring, it’s on his website. 5-speed.co.uk/
I’m told he’s good, but a trifle expensive. You get what you pay for!

I assume the engine is vvti, if so you will need MS3 to control the vvt (I was reliable informed today), also as the engine is higher compression than the earlier models 220 bhp is the max for a reliable engine before you start to bend rods.

I could not find any kits so I started looking at a drive in and drive out service. Try http://www.mx5expert.com/

I would get in touch with m tech if I were you ,I went for the flying miata from the states its quite an expensive way to go , where abouts are you based ?

Hi guys, so in answer to your posts I am stuck between supercharging it to keep the original feel and turbo charging to have the full kick these things can handle, I knew I wasn’t going to be pushing more then 210 bhp before I seriously started looking into it, I would be happy with 200bhp to be fair, much more poke for you money I suppose

I am based in Ashford in Kent, loving the country roads around where I live at the moment, I need a decent set of tyres for the 5 first as the current ones are death traps

I have been looking into the supercharge options mainly for the piggy back ECU option to keep costs a little lower initially, I will go for the full megasquirt set up eventually but for now just getting it running with all the gear would be nice

Have you considered flying miata voodoo kit its a turbo with piggy back ECU give 180hp at the wheels then you can upgrade later if you like ,it uses stock injectors,I started with that then upped the injectors fuel pump and also an me221 ECU  about 18 months later,I now have 251hp at the wheels and 212 feet pound of torque

I have 1.8vvt that has been boosted and I’ve been advised that the rods in this engine tend to bend if you go chasing too much power (200+). You could speak with Nick Bailey down at Skuzzle Motorsport near Winchester for more info.

As for tyres try kumho ecsta there really good grip and not that dear

I have been told by another user about kumaho tyres, was going to put a full set on my 5 soon as it goes

I bought a set I think it was about 198 quid fitted

I’ve also got a mk2.5…looking to turbo so wondering what the options are and what’s different to the mk1/2’s due to the VVT

I believe the VVT is higher compression, so with FI it can bend rods over 220 BHP.

I will never deal with 5 speed again. If the op wants details on why not then pm me.

more to do with the quality of the rods than the compression on the vvt engine tbh. Once Ford got involved it looks like they cheaped out on the rods. They’ll still take a fair bit of an increase in torque/bhp, but not at the same level as mk1’s/2’s. 230 is safe enough, 250 isn’t, this is from personal experience and from speaking to a tuning shop that have seen a number of vvt engines bend rods at around the 250 level.
