At least the forum is actually working again today.
I had repeated “404” failures over the weekend, gave up and went instead over to the other forum I run (which costs our “other” club just £100 a year to run and have hosted).
I simply cannot understand why, after all this time and all the ongoing problems we have, the MX5OC (possibly the largest car club in UK and certainly not short of a bob or two) persists with the present under-performing software platform.
Apart from the speed issues that have been going on and off for a very long time (and seem particularly slow this weekend) the forum software itself isn’t very good.
It doesn’t even support Tapatalk which a lot of people use on their mobile devices. Isn’t it about time we moved onto a more modern platform?
I appreciate that migrating a forum to a totally different system with a different service provider is an enormous amount of work but I really do think it’d be worth it. Judging by those figure given for our web services it would save the club a fortune. Over 7000 quid a year is a ridiculous amount for a site the size of this. It isn’t even displaying the page correctly this weekend.
I’ve been trying to post this since Saturday and it’s 404’d me every time so far.
Issues with 404s were the result of the “new” web front end and the forum being impacted was an unfortunate side effect of how requests are proxied through that server.
The web costs bucket includes a lot of things including email, mass mailing, the entire membership shatter, etc. , of which the forum’s direct cost is £0.
It runs on a server that we’d need anyway and has no license costs.
That all said, as has been stated many times in this thread, we all agree with the points made which is why there is a group of people working on the succession plan.
Agreed, and as Ramsay said not so long ago a succession plan is in hand with respect to the forum and other Club systems and an announcement was made in about August, at least it was in Soft Top Hardtop, and in email coms to Area Coordinators, plus discussion at the AC annual meet a few weeks ago, but on basis that forum itself has been working very well for the last few months its not made it on to here. I’ll put my hand up and admit that’s down to me probably. I’ll find somewhere appropriate to post something up shortly…
