Free Maps Update on 2018 ND2 2.0

Good afternoon all…!

I’ve just received an email informing me I can update my sat-nav map for free!
Just installed Mazda Toolbox to do this and I don’t seem to have the SD card required…!
Advise required and thanks in advance…
Rob

You’re keen  I got the email to for my MY20 but not had a chance to look at it yet … I don’t even know where the slot would be …

I will look for the slot later and see if there is anything in there …

First of all have you ever seen maps on the centre screen?

Can you see them if you press NAV?

If yes, you have a card in a slot. Check the handbook for where it is take it out put it in the PC and use naviextras.

If no, then no card, but still check the handbook for where, it might have worked loose.

The tricky bit IF no card.

Hmm, working from memory here. I might well be wrong and nothing happens but while I seem to remember this has come up before I can’t yet find the post about it.

Format a new SD card in a PC with FAT32. It should be 16GB or more because the map data is now about 9GB (I have a 32GB card in my Mazda3 copied from the original 8GB and then maps updated).
Put the SD card in the slot in the car and ask it to initialise it. It will try but say no map data. However the car will have put some relevant identification data on the card.
Now try the card with Mazda Toolbox again.

I’ve had a look at the key file “reg.sav” and it includes the VIN of the car and the version of the CMU. Wordpad saved this as a text file after I added a " at each end of the file. My current PC doesn’t seem to have a Hexeditor any longer. I’ve anonymised this with a few xxx in IDs.

You absolutely sure the SD card is not installed in the slot, Rob? Think the nav wouldn’t work without it

I saw an article somewhere recently that said map updates are now for 5 years so assumed that was for new cars. Think I saw it on the HERE mapping website (Mazda uses HERE maps). Maybe they have backdated the old 3 year update limit?

As an aside, I used Apple maps today (iPhone) and they seem to have updated their software as routing details are much better. Seemed to have speed camera warnings as well, but only about 100 yds voice warning but icon shown on screen way before that.

Hi pmba… There are 2 USB ports on the lower dashboard and what looks like it might be a card? Didn’t seem easy to remove so I left it for now until I knew more…

I received the update email today as well, but mine is now 5 years old and they want me to pay for the privilege. No thanks.

It needs a bit of jiggery pokery from memory, a flat tipped screwdriver to prise open the “door” which reveals the sd card in its slot. The update is then performed on a pc or equivalent and voilà!

There is a little rubber cover, it flicks off downwards and then you should see a card/slot. Fiddly to get the card out.

If no card then eBay has them upwards of £50 which is cheaper than the Mazda official price. Buyer beware etc but people who have bought from there have been able to use and update.

. See my post above for a different source. I bought one for a 2012 Citroën for £22 and it installed OK with latest maps.

Thanks all for the replies… It’s only when the Mazda software on the PC asked me for the SD card, I thought where is that?! Will have a fiddle later and see what’s what…!

Remember once you have opened the cover, it’s a push button remove i.e. push it in and it spring releases.
To insert push in against the spring, it clicks and remains in place.
If you don’t have an SD card then contact who you purchased it from, it was standard on all the Nav models, like Sport Nav, GT Nav etc.

Thanks again. SD card was in the slot - so removed, updated, put back in and all good!
