So the oldest MX5’s will soon be 25 years old. Here is a petition to make road tax free on all classic cars over 25 years old. When the scheme was set up this was supposed to happen but then got changed.
I know some of you will have older cars too so may be interested but I thought the oldest MX5’s are getting on a bit and it might be worth preparing for when they hit 25!
As I remember this used to be the position (no tax when the car was 25 years old) introduced by the Conservatives. A later Labour government froze the scheme so that no further cars qualified for this exemption.
Pig sick about the change even now - I was looking forward to my 31/1/81 MGBGT qualifying, then they changed the date - so an MGB bought 31/12/73 qualified on 1/1/1998 but exactly the same car bought a day later didn’t. There is no chance of changing this until everyone working in Whitehall is driving about in cars built before 1987 - that’ll be the time for the petition. Even then the government of the day will probably make it apply only to cars of a particular colour - or maybe fuel type. Water driven ones will cost the most because there won’t be any tax to collect from the oil based fuels - probably the plan is to tax water at the same rate as petrol and diesel are now - . That 'd sort out the overpopulation crisis, - cars and people, especially if they taxed fresh air as well (they’ll call that being carbon friendly). Solar panels might be the answer until sunshine becomes taxable.
