Free Road Tax for cars over 25 yrs old

So the oldest MX5’s will soon be 25 years old.  Here is a petition to make road tax free on all classic cars over 25 years old. When the scheme was set up this was supposed to happen but then got changed.

Here is the link if you would like to sign it:

I know some of you will have older cars too so may be interested but I thought the oldest MX5’s are getting on a bit and it might be worth preparing for when they hit 25!

Thanks

Simon

Would like to see this implemented but it won’t for 2 reasons:

  1. The Government need all the extra revenue they can, especially now during the cut-backs. They are tight buggers, look at the Dartford crossing!

  2. The Government don’t want old cars on the road. They’d rather people buy new ones to ‘stimulate’ the economy, hence the scappage scheme.

Signed though Smile

I agree Dan but it has to be worth a try. The more people sign the more seriously they might look at it.

Cheers

Signed. I missed out when they cut the date off at 1972 as I have a 1974 Triumph Bonneville that is now that is now 38 years old that I have to tax.

or you could sign this one…

or any of the other numerous e-petitions on various forms of road tax change…  Sorry, I’ a bit sceptical about these petitions…

Signed, I have quite a few years to go with my car, but on principal I think it should be signed.

Good luck, Neil

As I remember this used to be the position (no tax when the car was 25 years old) introduced by the Conservatives. A later Labour government froze the scheme so that no further cars qualified for this exemption.

Pig sick about the change Angry  even now - I was looking forward to my 31/1/81 MGBGT qualifying, then they changed the date  -  so an MGB bought 31/12/73 qualified on 1/1/1998 but exactly the same car bought a day later didn’t. There is no chance of changing this until everyone working in Whitehall is driving about in cars built before 1987 - that’ll be the time for the petition. Sad Even then the government of the day will probably make it apply only to cars of a particular colour - or maybe fuel type. Water driven ones will cost the most because there won’t be any tax to collect from the oil based fuels - probably the plan is to tax water at the same rate as petrol and diesel are now - Protest . That 'd sort out the overpopulation crisis, - cars and people, especially if they taxed fresh air as well (they’ll call that being carbon friendly). Solar panels might be the answer until sunshine becomes taxable. Confused
