FREE SAT NAV UPDATES

I have read that  the owner of a new mazda gets two free sat nav updates a year for three years.

Do the first two free updates of six start from the first registration of the new car OR are they based on a calendar year?

i.e. If a car is first registered in say July, are the first 2 of 6 updates free until June the following year OR only until December of that year?

My understanding is that it is free updates for the first 3 years, i.e. a car first registered in July would be applicable until July 3 years later.

You can update the system yourself, I’ve done mine a couple of times recently, you just need the Mazda Toolbox software (free download) and an SD card reader or laptop with an SD card slot.

The latest available version is December 2017.

Off topic, but I’ve also done my Infotainment and Music Database updates:

Infotainment: 59.00.502A
Sat Nav: December 2017
Music Database: 00.08.000

I think it’s 1 a year for 3 years from new so you get 3 updates. Ask your dealer to find out for sure.

im struggling with this on mine,

oct 15 registered so well within the 3 years of updates. I plug the SD card into the Mazda toolbox and it recognises my VIN, but says there are no updates available and no options to buy any or the connected services.  anyone else had this?

what I have noticed is that people who put up screenshots of the Mazda toolbox it shows them the map version in the left hand side, mine doesn’t, its just the VIN… confused.

As I understood it, 3 years free updates from date of registration, however many updates there are in that period.  My download speed is far too slow to handle them so my dealer updates when I take the car in for service.

So Mazda have answered my question

"The problem is, that you are the first person to connect the SD-Card to the Mazda Toolbox and because of the difference in time between the car being produced and the card being connected, there appeared a problem with the automatic generation of the license which is used to connect the SD-Card to your car.
This has to be done manually"

just wanted to share this in case it helps anyone else who buys one thats never been updated. They have passed this to the developers to resolve manually. I will update this post with the outcome assuming it works.

How do you update the infotainment and music databases?

Infotainment is supposed to be a dealer only job, but I prefer to do it myself:

Firmware Updates: https://my.hidrive.com/share/hsodpqja.l#$/ (Mazda Firmware > EU for UK models)

USB stick needs to be formatted as FAT32 and USB2.0 NOT USB3.0
Ensure the files on the USB stick are .up (Not Zipped)
REMOVE THE NAVIGATION SD CARD BEFORE INSTALLATION!! (NEXT TO USB SLOTS)
DO NOT TOUCH THE START BUTTON DURING INSTALLATION PROCESS!!
Don’t start the engine (DO NOT HAVE THE ENGINE RUNNING DURING INSTALLATION)
Set the car lights to OFF
Turn the interior light OFF
Enter accessory mode by pressing the Engine Start Button Once (No Pedals Pushed)
Plug the USB stick in
Press Music, Mute & Favorites at the same time for about 3-5 seconds
On Test Screen, Press 3 then enter, you need to see 'No Active DTC’
If you have active DTC or CEL, press clear, 2 and enter followed by clear
If you don’t have any, press clear then type 99 and enter
It should prompt to search the USB stick, press Search
Update the Fail-Safe Package first (NEVER REBOOT THE CAR BETWEEN FAIL-SAFE AND REINSTALLATION PACKAGE INSTALLS, THEY MUST BE DONE TOGETHER)
Keep pressing the clutch pedal every 10 mins to save the car shutting the accessories off during installation (FAILURE TO DO SO WILL BRICK THE CMU AND IS VERY COSTLY!)
Press Music, Mute & Favorites at the same time for about 3-5 seconds
Type 99 and enter
It should prompt to search the USB stick, press Search
Update the Reinstallation Package
Once the installation is finished, to restart the car, press the Start button, once, then twice (it will take time for the screen to shutdown, be patient)
Then press the Start button once to put the car back into accessory mode (Installation is complete) (Check Version Information)
You will need to reconnect your phone and reset your favourites
Re-insert the Navigation SD card

(You are supposed to press the clutch every 20 mins, but I shortened it to 10 mins to be on the safe side)

Gracenote Music Database Updates can be found here:

You just download them to a USB 2.0 stick, insert it into the car and in the menus there is an option to search for the update.

Got it; 3 years free sat nav updates from registration:-)

Can’t remember where I read that it is 2 free updates a year, so will need to research some more.

Never the Iess I vaguely remember contacting Mazda a few months ago and was told I have two free sat nav updates a year for three years.

I also believe I was advised that Mazda do an update in March and another in October each year.

I downloaded/installed my first free update in August 2017 so I assumed that it was Mazda’s March 2017 update.

With the above in mind if I do my second free update say in May 2018 will I be upgrading to Mazda’s March 2018 update or Mazda’s October 2017 update?

ie  When I download/install Sat Nav update do I get Mazda’s latest update or the update immediately after the one being updated?
