It is a new car, not a 2017, that is the one he traded in.

You can use the flash drives in the 2 USB-c ports if the android auto to the car is wireless. Only downside is you can’t charge the phone if both are in use, is that why you have the 12v adapter?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but my understanding is that new MX-5s (i.e. 2024 onwards) offer wireless AND wired AA (Android Auto) as well as wireless/wired CP (Apple Car Play).
Given that using Waze or Google Maps wirelessly with AA or CP sucks the life out of your
battery, I would use a wired connection.

OK.. the red cable connects my phone to the adapter which is plugged in to the 12v socket.
My question is why did the mechanic use the black cable to connect the adapter to the USB c port?
Ofiaich!
My guess is, it isn’t meant to be plugged in there, just parked in there. A spare USB for charging another phone.
Thanks MickAP,
It’s quite a tight fit, no wiggle movement at all.
I sent an email to the salesman asking him to find out what the mechanic was thinking.

Alas, I know very little about using Android Auto.
But some simple logic might suffice.
The phone has only one connector, and any Satnav (even as part of a phone) needs lots more power than simply handling calls etc.
So hardwired for external power is a good thing, and the built-in USB-C socket from the car’s Head-unit should supply sufficient power for this, and the bonus is it will also handle data.
Fortunately, your head-unit has two USB-C sockets. Have you considered using a USB-C to two USB-A-Female splitter to enable running both the two flash-drives on the second socket?
Ditch the 12V adaptor and both its leads. It does NOT support any form of data transfer, so it is effectively useless. I hope the black lead has not damaged the Head-unit’s USB-C socket.
Thanks RichardFX,
Both flash drives are USB c. I thought data transfer was through Bluetooth….

Then the splitter for your flash drives would be one like these C male to two C females
Unless you have something exotic, plug-in flash drives can only transfer data over USB, no Bluetooth.
Data transfer for the phone over a dedicated USB-C connection is significantly quicker and more reliable than competing for Bluetooth airspace. So phone should be happier, and I assume the head-unit will be too.
Thanks RichardFX,
I understood that… sorry I wasn’t clear, data transfer is through Bluetooth from phone to infotainment system. I understand about data transfer from flash drives.
Thanks for the link!

Called to dealership today…. This lead was from the rear dashcam. And has been removed…
Mechanic used a USB adapter to USB c because the Amazon plug had the front dash cam cable and the red cable to charge my phone…… so he routed the dash cam cable, squeezed it through here to plug into the USB c port
Now both dash cams are inserted into the Amazon adapter.
I’ll not bother with this for now and just enjoy driving may car!

I use the WAZE app on my iPhone connected by bluetooth to the infotainment system which works well. However, it does drain the phone battery pretty quickly so on long journeys, I tend to keep the phone connected to one of the usb C ports with a shortish lead. On our Corolla Hybrid, there is a charging pad in the space in front of the gear selector (auto) which works really well. Pity the MX-5 doesn’t have one. One note of caution, at first I placed the phone just to the left of the centre console where there is a phone sized space (unless you have one of those huge phones) charging via the usb lead. On our trip around Brittany late this summer, we noticed that the surface under the phone got extremely hot, so much so that it caused the sat nav app to throw a wobbly on occasion. It only seems to occur when the weather is warm and sunny though. Judging by the position, there is heat emanating from the engine bay. Something to be aware of though.
Very good! I don’t recognise the church, is it Patrington? You should have popped in for coffee, we are only 10 minutes from the Humber Bridge.
Hi mxomatiosis,
Yes, it’s St Patrick’s Church in Patrington and was a landmark for sailors. It’s the “Queen of Holderness” and the church in Hedon is The King,
Ten minutes in which direction? I would have enjoyed a coffee! I’m between Hedon and Withernsea! Often stop for a coffee in Hedon and Patrington!

Patrington church is a really unexpected sight for anyone who doesn’t know the area, a beautiful church but I’ve never set foot inside. I am in South Cave. I didn’t realise you were in the East Riding!
I had steel brake hoses on my last rf which made a big difference to feel of the brakes !
Nice !,I get my new Homura on the 27th dec, late Xmas present lol
Nothing wrong with being a few days late ![]()
