FROM MAZDA - DO NOT USE SH01-14-302A OIL FILTERS ON MX-5

Hi Folks

We have a Mk. 3.0 2008 two litre sport model.

Was told over phone from Mazda that oil filter was part code - LF10-14-302A

Another supplier has sent us SH01-14-302A

part codes are similar - will either work on ours or is one right and one wrong ??

Does anyone know what the difference is between and LF and SH genuine filters ??

Thanks in advance

From Mark

The SH01 number is an old number, LF10-14-302A-9B has replaced it. Mazda issued a TSB saying only use the LF10 number…

Hi Robbie

Does the TSB explain the differences between the 2 filters ?

I have a SH01-14-302A filter sitting on my bench in the garage and I would be eager to hear your comments before I fitted it !

Many thanks

No the differences are not explained. I guess the SH01 filter is fine to use, there must be loads of MX-5s driving about with them on. The SH01 filters are Japanese made, the replacement is a Thailand made filter. The SH01 filter is still used on Skyactiv-D engines.

Thanks for the prompt and reassuring answer Robbie…

All i will say is, do not use the ‘old’ filter sitting on your bench unless it’s in a sealed box and still has the plastic film over it.

As you probably know an open filter will draw moisture from the atmosphere and swell/block up internally.

Therefore using your logic if your cars is a mk1 or Mk2 (not a Mk3 as it is always full of oil) and left not being driven for a while the dampness will get in and block the filter as the way it is designed it is not to be full of oil when the engine is not running???/

Thanks everyone,

I think I am gonna speak to Mazda one more time before I fit this.

Can anyone share or provide a link to the service bulletin which says do not use these on MX-5 - there must be some reason for it.

And I want to know before I decide.

From Mark

The Ref. No. is MME/E002/16A. Issued Feb 2016.

Done a bit of research and it seems that the difference is the relief valve opening pressure is different.

Ok Robbie thanks.

Is there anywhere that we punters can get sight of that bulletin?

Can you copy the text into a post on here?

If the SH filter opens relief at the wrong pressure for MX-5 I deffo don’t want to be fitting it for one.

. . . and MX5 specialists should not be supplying it as the gen one for MK 3s.

I will try googling the ref no. you gave and I have logged a query with MAZDA technical to try and get to the bottom of this.

Mark

I would imagine that if you speak to the dealer who supplied the oil filter they will probably let you see the service bulletin.

OK Folks

STOP PRESS from Stuart Stringer - Customer Relations Manager at MAZDA UK

NOBODY FIT OR SUPPLY AN SH01 CODE OIL FILTER TO ANY MX-5

I think admin will need to create a sticky post about this on the Servicing Section - as it looks like all NC models will be affected and there are a lot of dealers and MX5 parts specialists who are either unaware of the technical bulletin - or trying to shift obsolete stock.

The engine reference he refers to e.g. LF is at the start of the engine number in your log book and stamped on the engine - mine is LF1049****

It is also coded into the VIN number e.g. mine is

JMZ (made in Japan)

NC (model reference)

18

F (signifies LF engine)

but please contact your Mazda Dealer if you are in any doubt as to engine type.

Good morning Mr Turner,

Thank you for the original email enquiry and time on the phone just now. I note the request for information on relevant oil filters and am happy to clarify further.

A service information bulletin was introduced in February 2016 stating any time an oil filter is replaced on the below engines, it should now be fitted with LF10-14-302A-9B.

Previous part number – SH01-14-302A

New part number – LF10-14-302A-9B

The above listed LF10 filter is now to be used on all LF, L3, L5 and L8 engines. Where applicable we recommend any servicing is carried out at a Mazda Dealership and would always recommend speaking to a Mazda Parts Department for correct parts if this is not the case…

(NB/ LF10-14-302A-9B is not to be used on SH or S5 engines).

The SH01 filter is still used on other models across the Mazda range, including the Mazda CX-3 and CX-5.

I hope this helps with the original enquiry and if there is anything else I can do to help in the future, please feel free to reply to this email or call me on 03457 484848.

Yours sincerely,

Interesting…

Ironically the same oil filter that was fitted to my new engine from the back end of 2015 to August 2016 was an SH01, MX5 parts even supplied me an SH01 oil filter, something just felt off though and when I looked on the parts EPC and only the LF10143029B was shown for my L8 engine…

Frustratingly though, the Mazda EPC if general searching for parts under the NC it still shows the SH01-14-302A as suitable for the MX5 from chassis numbers 141106 onwards…which means if someone has not kept up to date then you could still end up with the SH01 on your car.

hi all

just been supplied a LF05-14-302B by Moss Europe LTD of Bolney Way in Feltham

asked for an oil filter for a 2006 MX5 2.0ltr

is this filter ok ? stamped and boxed as Genuine Mazda filter

The filter by-pass relief valve will only operate if the filter gets clogged.  If (and it’s a big if, since Mazda are so concerned) that’s the only difference between old and new recommended filters then, frankly, if you’ve left the oil in the car so long that the filter is blocked with dirt, the difference between the two is the least of your problems!

Yep, would agree with that entirely. PR Valve is the last chance saloon

Is the SH01 filter the same as the OEM oil filter supplied by MX5 Parts. I have just ordered one of those for my NC and then, prompted by a review on the MX5 parts site, I read all these warnings. Why is nothing ever straight forward. Should I use the filter or return it for a refund?

The last time I changed my oil I was sent an LF10-14-302-9A filter (well actually two of them as the first arrived dented), this time a LF10-14-302A-9B arrived from a different supplier. I was surprised that despite the relatively close part numbers they’re quite different in design:

The 9A is a bit longer, made in the UK rather than Thailand and has fewer holes but with a larger diameter:

Was I wrong to ever fit the 9A filter? Or are the interchangeable?
