Front brace bolt nc2

  1. My model of MX-5 is: __NC
  2. I’m based near: __watford
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __stripped but front under brace

I was replacing the front brace, that goes over the oil drain, and I must have tightened a nut too hard. It just span and I managed to remove it. The threaded seating seems to have gone from the frame. I can’t see a way to secure the bolt moving forward. Admittedly the panel is safe and I still have four screws in, but I would assume I’m losing some stiffness because of this? Any fixes? I can’t see anywhere to put a nut above the frame. It’s too deep and inaccessible.

That’ll be a sump guard and I guess a way of collecting air that goes over the lower part of the engine. All the strength will be in the subframe itself.

It might have been a welded nut, or merely a thread tapped into the hole-punched frame.

There is a solution, insert a Riv-nut of the appropriate size and thread. I don’t know what exact size you need, but this is an M8 example.

The hole might need to be cleaned up enough to fit the insert.
Then pull it tight, a bit like a pop-rivet if you have the rivnut tool (best), or more simply doing up a bolt in it (take care not to spin it).

That is a great solution. Thanks for that! Never knew such a thing existed.
