My model of MX-5 is: __2005 launch edition (number 125)
I’m based near: __notts/lincoln
I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: __brakes
Has anyone fitted any of these recently and did you give them an extra coat of paint before fitting them ?I’m doing a full brake overhaul having just got some EBC standard discs and green stuff pads so I thought I might as well change the dust guards which are very manky on the front . Having done a search I know I will have to pull the hub which isn’t a problem but I was wondering if there is anything else I will need to do and whether an additional coat of paint on them would be a good idea ?(would it need to be heat resistant)
I’m currently doing dry January so to keep me from the pub I’m de constructing the car with the following jobs to carry out
Full dinitrol treatment (after my local garage missed a load of areas)
A few bits of bodywork around the arches - I will wind back the clock and re-spray the wings myself
Fitting meister zeta crd coilovers
New strut brace - required for access to shock adjustment
Fit cobra middle section and sports cat (already got the back section and if I grow a pair I might attempt a new manifold)
Full brake replacement (apart from callipers as these are like new and have been painted red)
And yes before anyone asks I did go to the pub far to much and drink to much ale
you can use hammerite paint on the dust shields.
i painted my manta calipers with smoothrite and it last for the 10 years i had the car and i painted right onto the rusted surface!
ok the other thing.
whilst you have the back end stripped down!
take off the rear bumper rail and paint the face plates!
its a hidden rust area!
here is a youtube that explains it all
Definitely worthwhile cleaning up and painting the dust covers. I did this recently when replacing the front hubs - The covers were a bit pitted with rust but overall pretty solid so managed to clean them up then treated, primed and painted with Simoniz silver wheel paint which seems pretty durable. Still some pitting marks visible but quite happy with the result. I also agree that removing and treating the rear bumper rail is a must while you have the bumper off. I was quite surprised how corroded the two surfaces were, though again, a good clean up and treatment fixed that.
Cheers for the advice I was going to do the bumper bar on the back - I’m looking at some heat resistant red paint (this will look good with the red callipers and black wheels). I’m starting stripping the hubs/suspension off at the weekend as I did the exhaust last night (and dropped it on my head) just debating whether to get a gravity ss exhaust manifold.
Once everything is stripped I’m going to do the dinitrol before the re-build is commenced
Well strip down completed (after buying a slide hammer for the front hubs), the rear right section behind the bumper bar has a 50p size hole which I will sort but the biggest ■■■■■■ was the front hubs the nuts were in a terrible state and the old dust shield are welded to the hubs. As I’ve got it all in bits and I only intend doing this once in my lifetime I’m thinking of getting a set of hubs from Mx5 parts. I could do with getting all new bolts but I’ve checked on the Mx5 parts website and they don’t list them. I have cleaned a few of the bolts up but I’m not confident in their ability to hold a socket (I didn’t round any but it was a bit close)
