Front bumper - clips on?

Station Car parkSomeone today kindly bumped in to my UK mk2 in the station car park and dented the o/s wing and ripped the front bumper off - which was nice!

They obviously didn’t have any paper with them, otherwise they’d have left a note! Anyway the wing I can get my insurers to pay for, but without a front bumper the car is a little undriveable.

Having looked at it in the cold / wet / dark it looks like the front bumper just clips on - is this right? If I go back in daylight am I likely to be able to attach the bumper and drive off safely, or will I need a tow / gaffer tap?

Station car park Many Thanks - Rufus.

G’day mate, Welcome to the Forum

Sorry your first post is bad news. If the Mk2 is fixed the same as the Mk1, and I’m pretty sure it is, then it’s held on by a bunch of bolts. Take the gaffa tape

I wasn’t going to reply because I’m not too sure, but since nobody has replied saying they know (for sure), I might as well give my thoughts

I would think it would be a combination of clips and nuts & bolts - that is a fairly standard way in most modern cars.

You could potentially secure it by re-clipping it, but I wouldn’t want to go any sort of distance, or at any sort of speed, because if it was to fall off and get wrapped around the front tyres/wheels, it could easily be fatal (sods law says it will be on approach to a corner or junction).

Have a good look at it (if you’ve not done so already), and take it from there. String/rope might be better than tape

Finally, commiserations - it is one of my fears to go back to my car looking like that (even a door ‘ding’ scares me a bit).
Keep in mind that CCTV might cover the area, but it might only be stored for a few days, so act quickly.

Thank you both for the advice. Managed to get the bumper roughly back on and drove it home.

Just in case it happens to anyone else on the MK2 there are hefty plastic clips near the two wing ends which support the ends of the bumper. Two screws / clips behind the bumper either side of the number plate (but you’d need a ramp to get to them), two screws at the extreme corners that screw upwards again near the wings, then seemingly 100 clips / screws holding all the undertrays etc. to the bumper.

Spoke to a couple of bodyshops, looks like it will need a new nose cone, and wing, plus a chunk of that area respraying. Defo an insurance job.

The Rail Transport Police have also taken a statement for filing, and there may be CCTV coverage of the carpark though to be honest I’m not that hopeful.

 Rufus.
