Front fog lights with no way to turn them on

Hi all,

Bit of unusual one. Got my mx5 NC 1.8 option pack a few days ago and noticed it has front fogs (didnt think they came standard!)

Anyway, I was having a fiddle today and noticed there’s no way of turning them on? if the fogs were added after surely the stalk in the car would’ve been changed?

Looking at the fog lights themselves, they look like they have 4 LED elements in them? I’m wonder8ng if they were installed as DRLs and just don’t function?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Sounds likely - the standard fogs have a halogen bulb.

Thanks for the info - i don’t really see the point if they don’t function? I don’t suppose you’d know where these would be wired to so I could check out if there’s a loose connection or something? I’m completely new to this sort of thing!

Thanks again

Hiya, you could do with checking at the back of the light itself first, it might not even be connected? You need to Jack the car up and take a wheel off, (it just makes access o much easier) undo the little plastic clips that hold the archliner on! no need to take them all off, just a few at the bottom part so you can ease the liner away from the wing. They have a Phillips style cross head plastic screw in the middle of them, turn it a quarter turn (either way) and it should pop out, then you can take the main clip out. That gets you to the rear of the fog. You can’t prise the plastic fitting out from the front of the bumper as its held in with clips but also a single screw from behind. The OEM loom will have a plug for the fogs even if not fitted. (Grey plug with blue wires IIRC) Just have a nosy to see what’s what. They may even have been wired to come on with main lights? Have you tried that? Anyway, then trace the wires (if connected) and see where they go. Don’t rely on the jack on its own to support the car though, shove the wheel you’ve taken off, under the sill, at least.

When I dropped the front part of the undertray & the front part of the wheelarch liners on mine a few years ago to fit some “proper” horns (fiddly job but effective!) - with the front of the car lifted slightly by running it up onto paving slabs, one on each side - I seem to recall that there was a small plastic cover under the car at each front corner, which could be removed independently of the undertray & wheelarch liners - at the time I thought that was probably there to allow access to the foglamps from beneath the car?

If my memory’s correct then that might be a bit easier than dropping the liners?

Also have a look in the fuse box under the bonnet, previous owner could have removed the fuse or it could have blown. It will most likely be one of the self installed piggy back fuse affairs.

Thanks for all your help!

Do you know what fuse I might be looking for? Sorry for the newbie type comment, I cant wait to get a bit more clued up!

I need to restore the headlights anyway - so I might leave the fog light job until then ??

Cheers ??

I changed the horns on mine by just dropping the front of the undertray.

Its tight though, so whether or not you can then do a 180 to see the fog lamps I’m not sure.

Being a little cinical, my guess is they are chinese and broken.

Could you ask the previous owner ? Owners? As to if there is a secret switch??
Just thinking!
