my name is Adam, I’m 19 and I’m new to this owners club - I recently bought my first car, it’s a 1990 mx5, and I have been spending a lot of time cleaning it up, and doing some cosmetic mods - painting the wheels, adding some chrome interior accessories etc. I want to take off my front grill to clean it up and get rid of the rust, but the bolts that attach it at the top to the bumper are rusted beyond recovery, so I’m having to buy some new ones to replace them.
Does anyone perhaps know the name or size of these bolts and the washers that are used alongside them? I have been searching for a while but I aren’t having any luck finding these particular bolts.
Hello & welcome, mk1’s didn’t come with a grill so it’s probably an aftermarket add-on. Perhaps a picture might be able to help? either way they will be going into plastic and are usually self tapping screws. If they are then either stainless or zinc-coated from a hardware store should be fine.
Hello and welcome from Nottinghamshire, and congratulations for getting into an MX-5 at such a young age! I can’t help with your specific issue, but others will soon drop by to help you out!

Welcome to the club and MX5 ownership - many years of fun driving ahead!!
I agree with Carl - there is not a grill as standard, so when you have taken off what is there, nip to B&Q, or somewhere similar and get something of a similar size. They will be self tapping (ie have a sharp point which creates their own hole), but get some that are galvanised (zinc coated) or stainless, so that they will not rust too bad - if you don’t, you may struggle to get them off again - like the ones that are there.
