Front Indicators not working on Mk 2.5

  1. My model of MX-5 is:2004 Mk 2.51.8 Artic __
  2. I’m based near: Fareham Hampshire __
  3. I’m looking for technical help or recommendations on: A problem with the front nearside an nearside repeater indicators. These have stopped working and when operating the stalk the front side light flashes instead. This happens with the side lights on or off. The rear indicator and rear light are not affected. Sidelight also flashes when the hazards are operated. Have checked and replaced the bulbs. Have also had the common earth, which is under the headlight, cleaned. I had this done by my local dealer as research indicated that it involved removing the bumper in order to remove the headlight. Cleaning the earth did resolve the problem for a couple of days but it has now returned. Has anyone any experience of this problem and possible solutions?. My logic is telling me that it is not the switch or relay but i may be wrong. Many thanks Richard

Sounds like the same earth needs rechecking. I’ve known people loosening earth bolts, wiggling the wires and retightening the bolt. Sounds like this maybe the case here and the earth still needs cleaning properly!

The earth is the cause of so many wonderful problems :+1:

Hi Coconino
Many thanks From my further investigation today it appears that you may we be right. Problem is getting to the earthing point as it is under the headlight. This appears to involve removing the bumper unless anyone on here knows of a way to fo avoid having to do so.

Hi Enjoyabull Thanks it does indeed!

You could run an earth to another point on the engine or chassis.
Using the original, inaccessible one is not compulsory.
It may well be the earthing point for other purposes as well though.

It is worth removing the bumper and headlights (both sides) to sort out the earths, If you are keeping the car do it once properly!

Hi 999to5
Many thanks. This might be an option but it is a common earthing point.

Hi Enjoyabull. Many thanks. Removal of the bumper doesn’t now look so daunting.
