Front Tow eye cover ND

2016 ND Soul Red

My front tow cover mysteriously disappeared, so I bought a replacement and some rattle cans, but for the life of me I just can’t get anywhere close to a colour match!

Is there anyone who supplies well painted tow eye covers?

400ml Aerosol Spray Paint, MX5 Mk4 Colours

Select Soul red from drop down box £14.28

I have already wasted a lot on aerosols, do you have experience with this brand?

Out of interest did you get the two different ‘coloured’ aerosol paints or did you just have the one colour.
This 400ml Aerosol Spray Paint, MX5 Mk4 Colours (mx5parts.co.uk) shows that you will need three tins of paint, base coat, colour and a clear lacquer.

You will be incredibly lucky to get anywhere near the factory paint…soul red is THE worst colour to match.

Good luck.

Not sure how much it will help but, when painting soul red crystal metallic (latter colour) I took some photos. the photo below shows the base coat

Then when building up thin layers of the red dye second base coat- I needed 10ish coats of this, the more layers the deeper the colour

Then the clear coat…

This wasn’t done with aerosols but should give you an idea of what to aim for

Tbh I doubt you would ever get a good match from aerosols given the variation in the dye layers. I am sure someone more skilled than me will disagree!

I tried a single can 1st, then the ground/mid/top set.

I only gave it 4 thin coats of each can, maybe I’ll have more luck with more coats.

I made a load of test plates with different number of base coat layers and dye layers to work out what worked best for me

My findings pointed me towards one coat of base and then up to 12 of dye. From about 6 coats of dye up the result looks ok until it’s placed next to the car…

The more dye the deeper the red. I used 2k clear coat over the top

As it’s from cans I would try two thin base coats and then 10-12 thin dye layers before clear

I would respectfully suggest that getting a good result from cans is hard especially with such an unusual method!

If you dont have the time / energy / confidence to paint your own eye cover - you could try asking your Mazda dealer.
My ND RF cover went missing several weeks ago.
I was planning to buy a replacement and the paint from MX-5 Parts.
But I figured I would try my local Mazda dealer.
They supplied two painted ones and one unpainted - 3 in total for 19.99
The took my number plate and confirmed the paint code etc. In the flesh the colour looks different to the rest of the car - but I suspect it it needed several more coats (as suggested above):
