having just used my Mk1 to go a short distance of 4 miles i felt the car was slowing down quicker than normal. I checked all around and found the frount disc and wheel was a lot hotter than the other 3.
Could the calliper be sticking? if so whats the normal cure for this. Plus what about gaarge costs ish
It does sound like a sticking caliper. If i were you i’d take take it apart and clean the slider pins and the shims that the pads move on. Dont forget to regrease.
If its still sticking i’d imagine a new caliper is whats needed.
If the disc is getting hot it will be because the piston is sticking in the caliper. The piston rusts around the seal under the dust seal and causes the piston to drag against the seal so it will not draw back sightly after the brakes have been pressed.
Purchase a new piston and repair kit from the likes of MX5 Parts and strip the caliper and replace the piston, seal and dust seal.
It’s not hard to do and if you purchase the parts any garage mechanic will be able to sort it in under an hour.
Perhaps you should purcase two pistons and two seal kits and have both sides done as I have always found that if one side is sticking then the other side will not be far behind. Save on the garage expense and get both done at the same time.
A common problem on these cars, I have found cleaning and lubing the pins, and levering the piston into the calliper then applying the brake several times will often free it up, this only works on the front as the rears have a screw adjuster system.
If it persists then a new calliper is the only way, catch it early and you will hopefully save your discs.
