Hiya im a realatively new owner of a mark 1 someone warned me that my lock would freeze up well this morning it did,I tried my little ock deicer on my key ring with no joy finally after half hour of wiggling the key i was in,is there any way i can prevent the lock from freezing or is there a sure-fire way of unfreezing the lock.
Take the door card off and spray everything with silicone lube, halfords own brand, yellow tin with a gray lid,and you will have no problem’s
Cool thanks i’ll try that
But no longer frozen…
Pump the lock barrel full of white grease using an aerosol with a thin straw attachment.
The problem with using lock de-icer and WD40 is that they dissolve and rinse away the grease that is in the lock barrel and then water gets in and freezes.
You could also try some proper graphite lock oil. Got me into an old Ford I was frozen out of yesterday!
These lock barrels are low-precision castings. There are lots of gaps between the components that water can creep into and freeze, especially on a well-worn lock on an early Mk1.
By packing the lock with grease you don’t leave any room for water to get in. Graphite powder and graphite oil are excellent lubricants for locks but don’t pack the lock and keep the water out.
Halfords silicone lube…easy do the window channels at the same time and lock mech.
Not only that, but for many older cars, the little sprung flap that is supposed to keep grit etc out is no longer sprung.
Fair enough. Squirty grease, then, I am more than willing to try - will this stuff do the trick (for the sake of a Halfords being easy to find for most people):
Am I presuming that you might want to wipe the key off after you’ve used it before putting it in your pocket? Greasy trouser time otherwise?
The graphite oil unseized the frozen lock on application. If that’s any help.
The Halfords spray grease will be fine. Useful stuff to have for the hinges and catches on the door, bonnet and boot.
I use Comma white lithium grease from Wilkinsons, about the same price and more than likely the same product that gets repackaged for Halfords.
Anything with a bit of solvent in it (de-icer, WD40, penetrating oil, spray grease) will undoubtedly unfreeze the lock but you need to displace all of the moisture and keep it out in order to stop having to do this every cold morning.
Yes, the key can get a bit messy for the first few insertions but white lithium grease is fairly easy to clean up and stains textiles somewhat less than black graphite oil.
Halfords silicone lube…back of the lock, straw on, spray in lock …job done ,reaches every orifice and puts a barrier on and lubes without getting deep and OTT,10 min’s, job done, no problems untill next year, do it again in oct, before the bad weather sets in again
Thanks for all your help im gonna get some of that halfords stuff
Worked a treat bought some last night from halfords ,locks are lovely and smooth what a difference !! waiting for the frost again to see if they will freeze
Which did you try - the regular grease or the silicone lube?
Its a white can i think its spray on silicone grease took me a while to find it !! I think its called “white”
ya can always do what i’ve done… fit a remote start alarm/immoballiser with a C/L feature, altho i did have do source a solanoid for the drivers door as mk2’s only have a motor in the passenger door and a ‘switch’ around the drivers door barrel. (alarm was off ebay £40 and i’ve had the same alarm previously, along with a few friends and had no problems what so ever).
Further to all this, anyone got any handy hints for stopping the door seals getting frozen stuck?
Just a thought, as I’ve just seen a press release from Autoglym warning of a ‘big freeze’ coming next week. Door seals are mentioned, but only in a decidedly vague manner…
