Hi
Had my MX-5 Mk3 1.8 few months now and I do notice a little benefit in terms of fuel efficiency and the engine runs smoother when I use a quarter bottle of Redex. Not tried the new Redex in my view it’s just too expensive at £17.00 a bottle. (5 in 1)
I also sometimes put a bit of Shell Nitro in which again makes it run a bit smoother, probably about the same as Redex.
What experience have other members had with fuel additives?
Hi
On my Mk1, I use Esso Supreme unleaded occasionally as it has double the detergent, seems better value than an additive
This is just to help clean, as the MX5 mk1 engine does not gain performance from higher octane petrol
The engine runs smooth regardless
regards
Mark
If you are putting in an additive it is because the petr0l you buy is missing something.
Petrol in the UK is great quality so there is nothing to miss.
There is no reason to use an additive unless you can actually give a reason for doing it.
I notice you do not provide exact mpg figures between the treated and non treated petrol nor actual accelaration time reductions.
Sorry but saying it runs a bit smoother is just a case of saying I have done something therefore it must be better.
There is no advantage to putting an additive into UK supplied petrol that is speced for your car.
I the states there are some vendors seling petrol or Gas that is not up to spec.
A couple of years ago I had my NA (Mk1) "Terraclean"ed. Not an additive you add to the tank but a process that cleans carbon from the combustion chamber, valves and fuel system.
It was tested before and after the process on a MOT spec emissions tester and the emission dropped by a third. It also ran smoother and pick up on acceleration had improved.
As part of a group booking organised by Eastern region it cost £50 at the time, it’s a bit more expensive now though.
As someone who can be a bit sceptical about these things I was pleasantly surprised, and would thoroughly recommend it.
Managed to find the readings I had that day following the Terraclean.
CO dropped from 0.169% to 0.124% and HC went from 24ppm to 16ppm. Lambda stayed as the same at 1.000.
Every two years I use Techron Fuel system cleaner. It is not the cheapest but it is recommended by Ford in one of their Technical Bulletins so I think it must be OK.
I have not done comparison figures before / after, but couple that with using Tesco Momentum 99 helps to keep fuel system and injectors clean.
I have a 2005 MX-5 Mk 2.50 that has covered a genuine 19500 miles only.
